Yeah, I remember. Castrol was marketing their Group III as synthetic and won the suit against them because it wasn't pure crude oil... Even though it still isn't synthetic in the true sense of the word.

A bit of an over simplification with that explaination but accuate.

Ahhh, there's the problem, says synthetic, but most over the counter synthetic oils are still dino, better dino than yo daddy's, but still, dino.

Yup, this is it. Anywhere but US and that same oil is a synthetic blend.

Ohhh didn’t know..got me some research to do then. I’ve never had any issues always do 8-10k changes also usually comes out just a little tainted.

Unlikely you will have any issues. Majority of the Group III synthetics can easily go 8-10k OCI in a modern clean running engine. Like I said, still much better than the older cheap Group II oils, but it is actually dino, not true synthetic. Very few do a true Group IV now. Some Amsoils do, as does RP (I think, unless they changed their formula). M1 used to be, but they changed 5 years or so ago to a blend.

Only way I know of to get a true Group IV base is to buy a 0W-xx oil. Unless that is also changed, the way they get the 0 weight can only be done with a predominately Group IV base stock.

Great information but it’s chinese arithmetic to me until I get some basic understanding of the foundation of oil. I’m gonna look all this up tonight. I really appreciate your insight to it. Screen shotted an save for reference later.

    www.bobistheoilguy.com is a good resource

Probably a bit much on the info, but it's just a pet peeve of mine. The Group III synths are a fine oil for the vast majority of people and uses, but I just like to know what I'm buying and it's not easily accessible info, and to find you have to dig or find someone who pushes how it's used.

Totally understand that..just a DD for me no towing some really mild off-road use, so store bought always worked well for me. My old street car always used amsoil on everything.

    Doesn't matter TBH.

I don't want the blood of anyone lubricating anything of mine. It coagulates and gets sticky and that's the last thing you want when lubrication is necessary.

Eh. I wouldn't go that far.

At this point in the game, what differentiates one brand over another will be the additives used in the lubricant. Even with a Group IV or V PAO/other lubricant, the additives used still play a huge role in the longevity of the lubricant. The better additives are going to allow better resistance to molecular degradation. Pure conventional oil can offer the same protection at a lower price point than a synthetic, assuming non-high stress performance. I wouldn't use conventional oil in a performance vehicle. The trade off is that conventional oil will need to be replaced at a higher frequency than synthetic oils.

Yep. And for all the M-1 hate, I've never had a cause for concern even after running 10k between oil changes using M-1 synthetic. The only other oils I've ever used have been Shell Rotella and Repsol in the motorcycles, and my criteria is different since the clutch has to be factored into the equation.

You know me, this is my industry. I'm not going to waste time on questionable or subpar products.

At the same time, I'm going to exercise economy of effort with this as well. I'm not racing Formula 1 cars and even with my sport bikes I'm not pushing them to their limits. I'm using quality products and moving on.

Nah, don't say that. Any questions you have just ask.
