I got a Tacoma my wife has a 4Runner to tell the truth I like the 4Runner better most of the time. I need the tacoma for my hobbies like kayaking, surfing, paddle boarding.

Yep. Numerous dealers from the north to the south will give ya better trade ins and private party sales the t4r brings more money. Still love my taco and got a great amount for my 2nd gen, but I know the t4r demands more.

My Tacoma was higher when I compared it to the '18 TRD OR T4R, 73% in 3 years versus 68% on the T4R.

Top 3 resellers are a 'Yota so yeah can't go wrong with a Toyota. At least selling one.

Check your facts. Tacoma has always edged out the 4Runner on resale.

I imagine them being built in Japan could factor into that. My wifes Rav4 is almost 3 years old, we have zero issues up to this point. My Tacoma with 3k miles on the clock is currently sitting at the dealership for the 2nd time in two days while they figure out why my brakes vibrate so bad. The hood glue is also failing and the front lip fender doesn't line up. The fit and finish on her Japan built Rav4 is much better than my Tacoma by quite a bit. I wish they would start making the Tacoma in Japan again. I'd pay more for it.

Year for year and build for build no. Especially because the 4 runner costs more and there are less available on the used market.

Surprised to see the Tundra up there. Probably due to low gas prices over the last several years.

The Tacoma was never built in Japan.

Just a heads up, but my wifes 17 RAV4 hood flaps like crazy. I have not pointed it out to her as I don't want to have to deal with it lol. It overall feels like a new vehicle should though. My 17 taco on the otherhand... lets not talk about that.

What does initial cost and overall production have anything to do with resale value?

I think a lot of the resale value has to do with Toyotas slow vehicle recycle rate. Basically you can buy a 4 year old Tundra because it looks pretty much like a new one. Also quality obviously, it's probably going to drive like a new one too.

Same way 98% of Taco owners shift theirs.

I can also adjust my seat.

You're talking about Pickup's. Tacoma's, from 95.5, were domestically produced (and adjoining countries).

I have the Taco for utility. It can fit the family - though pretty tight, and sometimes my wife complains about how cramped it is on long trips. But, when we travel, we generally are camping or at a minimum we have bikes/kayaks/boards with us and with my bed rack + prinsu + rolling tonneau setup it's hard to imagine a better way to carry all our stuff. Plus, when we get done with the activities it's SO nice to be able to easily throw the nasty stuff in the bed easily and keep the interior from smelling like river funk and rotten arm pits.

Only other option for me would be a full size and so long as I live in and work in a city and want to hit tighter trails, that's a no go.

I love T4R and every time I find myself fighting with the transmission or some other quirk w/ this motor/tranny combo I try to talk myself into a 4Runner. Then I try to talk my wife into a T4R, but she doesn't like the larger size (compared to her CRV).

    So...Taco it is. For now.

Dangle beat me to the link but yeah, the 4Runner has always been behind the Tacoma. Tacomas have been best resale value something like 6 out of the last 10 years and 3 of those other years, it was #2 behind the FJ.

You also have to remember that a lot of places will tell you a model year X 4Runner is worth more than a model year X Tacoma dollar-for-dollar without any consideration that the 4Runner was probably more expensive to begin with. You used to be able to get a Tacoma for 60% the price of the base 4Runner when single cab 5-lug trucks were around. As far as a percentage of retained value, the Tacoma is king.
