I keep reading with interest on these TSB's that are mentioned.

Will they become a recall (lumped all together) if one just waits?

I purchased my '18 Limited in July; mfg. in May. Going through these threads there are TSB's, shaking hoods, upholstery problems, leaks, shifting problems, wind noise, etc., etc.. i have not a single noted problem with my Tacoma over the miles since purchase. None, zilch, nada., pure Toyota. I have asked questions, answered questions and can only say this truck is absolutely fantastic as was my '03 Tundra with 317k miles. My vehicle I.D. number is listed on the TSB for a possible transmission shift problem. I am not going to have it done as the trans is super smooth and I don't want the dealer to screw it up. I am a super anal pilot and treat my vehicles the same. My squawk list waiting for the 5k mile check is blank. I understand Tacomas are the Number 1 selling mid size and Toyota manufactures tens of thousands of Tacomas a month....and rarely do they sit on a lot very long. Maybe 96% of Tacoma owners are not on this websites' squawk threads. Those that are seem to be in the majority customizing in one way or another, which is good for those who desire to do so. No vehicle is perfect irregardless of cost, and recalls come and go. Just my 25 cents worth. Enjoy!

Why would a TSB become a recall if it's not safety related or the symptom it corrects does not affect all trucks?

You need to understand what a TSB really is.

You are lucky. I was just glad to find the forum to keep from feeling like a crazy person. My '17 has had most TSB issues... and some recalls though it has only been flagged for the blower motor officially...

    Some of the main things....
Crankshaft position sensor (CKP) - failed at 10k and truck started nearly stalling in traffic
Chirping fuel pump that got so bad I couldn't hear someone out the window at a drive thru... - fixed with TSB
    Leaking rear diff
Whining diff - somewhat fixed by TSB
    Warped rear drums
    Low transmission fluid
Whistling control arms - easy fix, done myself
2 TSBs on the ECU calibration... the last one is much better overall, but the transmission learning and the low idle (causing the compressor to nearly stall the truck when it kicks on) is still a miss - OVtune fixes this luckily

Add to that the fact that my truck vibrates and makes weird noises and seems to struggle when I run 87 octane gas. I run VPower not for power or the octane necessarily, but because the truck doesn't vibrate quite as bad or struggle as much when I run it. Had I known I would have to run premium to enjoy driving the truck when I bought it, would have made me think harder about buying a "bulletproof" Taco...

I repeat. Despite all of these confirmed issues (many I had to fight to get fixed) when I login to my Toyota Owners site, the only thing it says my truck is tagged for is the blower motor.

I enjoy driving the truck most days when it isn't acting temperamental, and it fits my lifestyle, but I'd lie if I said I wasn't always looking over my shoulder for the next thing to go wrong. And while I could be wrong, I'll be shocked if this truck makes it to the 250k-300k miles I intended when I bought it brand new off the lot.

    /rant

Edit: truck also struggles with low speed ignition stability. misfires are more than I'd expect from a new-ish engine. On a cold start it's not uncommon for me to see 10-15 misfires in a short 15 mile trip. Dealership says this is fine and the threshold for misfires to trigger a code is like 35 in a 100 ignition cycle. Hook my scanner up to other Tacos and other vehicles, and yes all engines misfire sometimes... SOMEtimes... like a misfire or 2 on some trips.

Yup....I have a love/hate thing going with these forums right now. I am in the market for a new truck, and have an offer for the 18 model of the exact same truck as a 19 I put a deposit on but for 2500 less - essentially a free shell - but I can’t pull the trigger on it because I’ve read too much. These forums have made me a mental case! Tacoma World is costing me 2500 bucks! Lol....

You my man are the first person I have seen with the same warped rear drums that I had! We must have gotten Friday trucks. I still love my truck, but between the numerous brake issues (back and now front), and now today got the second TSB done for the trans (fingers crossed), I have felt disappointed at times. Really just let down a little. But like I said, I love it, and it's still a great truck, plus some of it is probably my fault, I love driving fast and have always had cars.

    Fresh gas.

    +1 for me.
Been watching most of this stuff like a hawk and none of the issues have popped up. My driveshaft was even greased properly. I even get around 23mpg in my 6MT. Best i've done so far was about 27mpg. I think I had a tailwind though, or at least not a headwind!

Anyway, love my taco - she's been great!

Only thing i'd like are some sliders.. for eventual offroading and paint protection.

Edit: I'm at 15000miles on the odometer.

People with problems are always gonna come online and post 'em up. Trouble free taco owners a far less likely to start a 'trouble free taco' thread. In an effort to help keep things real, I'll say aside from navigation that would have been embarrassing a decade ago, I'm enjoying a 100% trouble free '18 TRD AC CB AT.
No stumbling, fumbling, quirks, jerks, howling, whistling, wobbling or whining..

My 2 month old 2018 TRD OR has an awful howling noise coming from underneath (sounds like a Kazoo at certain speeds). Not tolerable. And even after the trans TSB, the shifting in D is undesirable (although improved). Clunky shifts now from 2 to 1 daily. Dealer said nothing they can do about it.

I read for months on TW about all the 3rd gen issues. Figured it was just overblown internet stuff. I was either wrong or unlucky.

Just today I noticed some flapping of my hood on the interstate. Looked underneath and some spots are coming unglued. So, I got on TW and sure enough, another common issue.

At this point, I couldn't recommend this truck to anyone. And I've been a fan and taco driver for almost 20 years.

Where in shift problem T-SB do you find the vehicle I.D. that the T-SB applies to?

Tacoma world is shit for that. I tried to gain some insight when buying a new 2018. I was 50% because of the shit talking. Took one for a test drive for 4 minutes and bought it right then and there! I initially went in for a different one and liked the one I bought more. Listen to yourself and get what makes you happy

Only reason I gave up my 2nd gen was because of an accident. I was sick about it, as I've been reading all the negative stuff about 3rd gens. I finally decided to go for it, because I really need a truck and didn't want a full size.

3 days off the lot, and it started howling like a kazoo at 28 and 58mph. Got back on TW and found out about the TSB. So I got the TSB a week later. The TSB didn't fix it and here we are almost two months later and Toyota is telling me it's normal (it's not normal).

Just google Tacoma Differential howl and you can see what the sound is. Lots of you tube videos. The dealer is telling me they can't do anything without approval from corporate. Really regretting my purchase and I don't have money to lose on a trade. Feels like I got taken advantage of, but it is what it is, I guess.

But there are a lot of them that are just fine, too. Lots of happy drivers, as well. Obviously, there are more without problems than with problems.

They won't take it back. Dealer told me to Lemon Law it if three fixes don't do the trick. At this point, they're not even offering a fix #2. They said they're waiting on corporate to tell them what to do. That's fine, and I'm on board, but nearly two months without resolution? Just my opinion, but that's not acceptable.

It's a bit more than that, for a TSB to be applied the truck has to exhibit the problem first so it's not an automatic thing, no need for a fix if it's not broken or complained about.

Recalls are automatic whether it exhibits the problem or not.
