Please correct me if I'm wrong,but doesn't this kind of slant towards gvernmentoverreach .... do you think as long as I obey the FCC communication protocol rules who gives a rat's ass what kind of radio I use

 

I agree completely. I have the same issue with govt control of what firearm I can or cannot own.

But then again, there are ignorant knuckleheads that will have the same radio as yours and mine and flip to a channel that is a reserved for first responders or other disallowed frequencies.

Our previous discussion of the general use GMRS/FRS/MURs frequencies on my Baofeng is still fuzzy to me. I still am not sure whether it’s legal or not to use those frequencies on my Baofeng because of the power output of the radio.

I do think that these high powered cheap radios are being used with very little frequency discipline. IMO, there are two basic ways to control it:

1. License the radio operators so that they know what channels to use and how to properly use the airwaves. Or...
2. Regulate the hardware, which appears to be the goal of this recent radio ban

Licensing all radio operators is apparently not happening soon. That HAM test tends to scare people away. So, regulating the hardware is a next step.

I - for the most part- agree with both of your comments, and yes, govt oversight is needed, hence the licensing.
I guess I'm just pissed off, because I just invested spent money on equipment that I can't legally use, even though I use it within licensed frequencies.
All I need is some jack-ass ham operator report me to FCC for using banned radio. (B4 you ask how would they know?.. I signed onto local repeaters a few times, so they know my call signs. They also asked about my equipment, so they know what I use. )

 

The way I understand this new environment, we are not legally not allowed to use our Boafeng radios at all. Unless I'm missing something, they aren't certified to do anything. (I hope I'm missing something)

 

Seb, If you don’t mind me asking:
1. What are these “licensed frequencies” that you are using?

2. What is your call sign?

3. What is your equipment?

4. Who is “they”?

 

This particular FCC advisory does not make any statement regarding radios that are already in the hands of consumers. At least that is how I read it. Of course I could be wrong. Every day I’m wrong at least once.

I’m pretty sure this advisory has already ignited a firestorm in the HAM radio operator’s world. We’ll just have to see what direction this goes.

It’s not to be taken lightly. My guess is that there are MILLIONS of these radios in the hands of unlicensed AND licensed operators.

Sorry, I guess I could try harder to be more vague.. Lol
1. I was talking about 2m and 70 cm bands (144-148 MHz and 420-
450mhz) there are a few local repeaters within those frequencies.
2. KD2QIW
3. Baofeng F8HP
4. As mentioned, local ham operators.

Yeah. I’m guessing (or hoping) the Baofeng’s and similar inexpensive overseas radios already in the hands of licensed Hams will
be grandfathered in, simply because of the sheer numbers already in use.

It says that because they are not authorized by FCC (they can transmit on frequencies lower and higher than 2m and 70 cm are allowed, and could transmit narrow and wide band) , no one can use them. So I'm basing my anger off of that.

 

As long as you will not admit to anyone what equipment you are using, you are all good.

If you can pass this girly walkie talkie test by studying for it, then the Ham Technician License test should be a piece of cake for you.
