I'm in the midst of getting quotes/pricing right now (gonna trade my X5 in).

Initially was looking at the Sports trim (love that fake hood!) but got some pretty decent quotes on 2018 SR5 models. (almost a $5k difference!). I've test drove both the Sports/OR and prefer the Sports handling.

Other than sports shocks and LED drl's, what else am I losing out on the SR5? Is the cloth seats the same or inferior to the Sports/OR? Also, does the SR5 sit lower compared to OR/Sports due to stock shocks?

I was planning to replace the tires/grill regardless so wondering if I should just take the bite on the SR5, upgrade the tires/TRD grill instead and pocket the rest?

Also, am I in the minority to consider 2WD? I live in NorCal (Sacramento region) and we only get rain/mud in winter. I do make winter trips to Reno/Tahoe areas but in winter, they all require chains anyway regardless of 2W/4W. I do lots of hiking/camping but no major off-roading.

Owned a Prerunner SR5 2WD back in the day and put over 140k on it and never wished for 4WD as it just did the job.

The more I read here, it seems to buy a 2WD truck is nothing short of committing a major sin ..lol!

    Thanks again fellas!

    CA, yeah get the 2wd.

    SR5 is a great truck!

    Sport has PTS,
    Bed mounted outlet
    Wireless Qi phone charger
    Upgraded head unit with nav
    Turn signals on side mirrors
    Maybe more I'm forgetting...

Go compare them on the lot, that's the best way to get a feel for fit and features

Sport and SR5 same ride height. A lot of people swap the grill regardless, nbd. Off the top of my head, aside from what you listed TRD Sport also includes NAV/nicer head unit, mirror blinkers, color keyed bumpers, keyless? start, and limited slip diff. If you don’t need 4wd and never ever plan on off-roading, get the 2wd and save some money upfront and down the road in gas and maintenance. They’re doing pretty good deals on leftover 18s. Good luck.

There are quite a few differences between the two. For the most part, they are cosmetic (painted rear bumpers, wheels, scoop) and some convenience options (radio, packages). Mechanically, other than the shocks and wheels, they are the same.

Between the two, I just don't see enough improvement for the price difference. I'd buy the same truck between the two today. I might would opt for an OR over my SR5 though.

For 5K savings just get the SR5 with the grill, wheels and tires on the SR5 and you will still be way ahead. Hell use the 5k savings for the upcoming twin turbo;)

If you never felt the need for 4wd and your habits will stay the same, I doubt you ever will.

Sport has a couple nicer things here and there but it's nothing major, mostly cosmetical. Push start is nice but at the end of the day not a dealbreaker and the headunit is the same(As long as you get the premium version on the sr5), which is mediocre for all models.

It's the Off Road that's the real upgrade with a locking diff and crawl control but that's more off road related which you say you don't need.

$5k is a big chunk of change. I'd also vote SR5.

4WD - even if I were in CA, AZ, I'd still get a 4WD. Too many washed out roads in the back country, slippery boat ramps, out on dirt roads in the one annual heavy downpour, etc. Then, of course, the road trips to snow country. Use that $5k to get into a 4WD.

You can save close to $1500 by going with an SR instead of the SR5. You lose only the dash LCD, leather steering wheel, fog lights and the optional backup sensors/blind spot monitors at the top of my head.

When I bought my truck last month I was between SR5, OR,and Sport. Wife decided SR5 because she liked the softer ride.

Main differences between SR5 and Sport:
    • Black bumper “chin” vs color matched (looks like the OR)
    • Chromed rear bumper caps vs color matched (looks like the OR)
    • Color matched flares (like the sport)
    • No hood scoop
    • SR5 wheels
    • Headlights don’t have the LED DRL “C” lines
    • Side mirrors don’t have turn indicators
    • Head unit is “lower end” though I couldn’t personally detect a difference in usable features
    • Some say the seats are softer? This is conjecture as far as I know
    • No Qi wireless charger in the SR5
    • No AC power in the bed
    • No Proximity key with push start

I find I don’t miss the extra features. For my 18 mile round trip commute every day and weekend trips to Lowe’s, the SR5 is just fine.

I don't think you get the BSM with that package. Just the sonar's.

Correction, yes you are right and you lose the Navigation as an option.

Great list although the only correction is that the headunit is the same if you get entune premium which sr5 has. The difference is that trd's can have JBL added but that's an extra charge either way that you could get better sound for less $

Thanks everyone !! I think if I do end up with the SR5 (it's a super white as well), I might be content with the TRD Pro grill upgrade plus BF KO2s. Appreciated!!

This is close to what I have planned for mine. So far I’ve just done side steps, removed the air dam, and added the tailgate Tacoma vinyls but am planning on a leveling spacer for the front (won’t leave pavement), some beefier tires, Pro grill, and maybe a tonneau cover if I find I really need it down the road.

    Good luck with the purchase!

Just one thought though I would opt for the 4x4 even if you don't plan on using it. Look at the resale value of a 10 year old truck that's 4x4 and 2wd the 4x4 is almost always 5 grand more. 4x4 trucks hold their value the best against depreciation

Came as an option. Isn't standard though.

Ha..I love the X5 and had fun driving the oil burner for 7 years. However, its 80k now and running into electronic/sensors starting to break down and my extended warranty is running out next year. So far, have done about $5k in repairs under extended warranty. Just had the air suspect ion replaced last month. But the diesel engine itself has been rock solid. But the cost of ownership outside warranty is not cheap like a Japanese vehicle.

I have an SR5 because I figured the less fancy stuff I have the less that can break down the road. However, if I could do it all over again I think I'd go offroad for the locker. All in all, I used the money I saved buying an SR5 to buy mods so that's pretty cool.
