I got my front and rear 5.29's gears and ARB air locker from ECGS for about 1500 (with 10% discount). I didn't order the master install kit because my truck has 10K on it. So, I chose to stick with same races and bearings. I was initially planning on re-gearing myself, but I am down 4 employees and next few weekends I am busy so I don't have much time to play around with it. I don't think it is too hard, you just need the right tool and there is lot of help online.
I took out the 3rd members and took to Rearend Specialties in Santa Clara. They are charging me 250 per 3rd and extra 100 for installing the locker. So, my total cost will come out to 2100 or so.

Yep. Every shop i called in sac was around the same give or take a few 100. cheaper if you pull the thirds yourself. Why I went with ECGS as i could have them here to install and return the cores no down time. If i was you i would use a local shop as you have other cars to drive and down time isn't a big deal. Easier for warranty with local guys like west coast or jaws. Or if you don't want warranty there was a few guys I talked to that were alot less. But they wont warranty if there not doing the complete install.

Thats to keep the rookies away. You know the ones tat google mapped the trail. Might as well searched in WAZE app. lol
Just like many trails that are listed as hard. If your a good driver and well prepared there not as hard as you might think. My truck has surprised me a few times or two. BUUTTTT, That dosnt mean everyone should follow me. LOL. Nor should they be miss lead into thinking there easy trails. Look at all the IG guys trashing there pretty new trucks, flopping them, ripping axles out, consent dumb asses that we don't want to see up there. they dont belong there, and we don't want to be first res ponders to there stupidity. I love to help out others on the trail until its someone that should not be there at all.
So keep that in mind when you say its not hard.
But ive done shit open, open that others failed locked. I still wouldnt advise other to go try it without saying be prepared to break shit. Not that you will but the potential is there..

Is it 2019 yet im ready to be done with this thread.
    JK
    I Love you guys!

Let me know what route you go. My truck is in desperate need of gears. Budget friendly! I feel the same about the front locker. I don’t need it.

So an extra 900 for about a days labor that you will be doing yourself is money well saved. OR worth it to pay someone if you can.
I was quoted for rear locker and gears 100% install 1 to 2 day turn around from 3k to 3.5k
I went the ECGS route had them ship me complete front and rear diffs with gears and rear ARb solid spacer and ECGS bushing with slightly used bearings for right around 2K i think it was a little less but its been a few yrs now. memory sucks. You should of just ordered completes. would of saved you time and headache of driving parts around town.

Well originally I was going to get pre-assembled 3rds from ECGS, but then I wanted to do the gears myself just to learn. That didn't happen so I ended up taking it to the local shop. If I would have ordered from ECGS pre-assembled 3rds, I could have saved another 200 or so. ECGS got the best deal if you are willing to spend a little bit of time taking it apart.

I'd want to beef up other components down there to minimize the risk of breaking shit. That's more money.

If I can get up the Staircase at Slickrock without a front locker, then I probably don't really need one.

I'm getting really tired of the transmission always kicking down on the slightest uphill. Going up 80 is just stupid.

How does the 4.88s handle hills on 35s?

I’m looking at about $1500-$1600 for ECGS gears and install myself.

I agree about the front locker. I use my rear locker fairly often but I’m cool with no front locker. It’s like $1200 for a front locker and compressor and extra work to plumb and wire it up. I can do a lot with $1200.
