Ah. Damage Multipliers.

 

The idea behind damage multiplier is as follows:
If you were to hit something solid, instead of just damaging your front bumper, the above grill guard will fold into your front grille, headlights, and hood. This occurs because there are only 2 mounting points holding it on, and they are both at the very bottom. Since it only connects to vehicle at the very bottom, it is much easier to bend and does not withstand much force.

They do protect against branches and things of that nature. Plus they do look cool!

I like that style of guard. Reminds me of the old ranch hands.

 

Most aesthetic upgrades can’t be expected to prevent damage. These certainly don’t. Calling them damage multipliers may not be entirely accurate, in that the truck would take equal damage hitting something with, or without a brush guard. But they are for looks, not protection.

 

I have. Watched a guy distracted on his phone roll into a big box truck at a stop light, hit him at about 5 mph, the brush guard folded back, busted his grill and taco'd his hood. Without the brush guard, his bumper would have hit the trucks rear steps and that would have been it. But because it was bolted from below, under the bumper, it caused it to bend back into the grill and hood. It was actually pretty interesting to watch, but probably not for him...

But yes, I love how quick people are so quick to throw in the "damage multiplier" statement...

 

Oh I’m totally a hypocrite because I have a damage multiplier too.

I call them a damage multiplier because it’s true. In a frontal crash, it collapses and folds in and damaged the fenders and the hood.

Let’s say you hit a pole. Usually you’d only have to replace the radiator/core support area and maybe the hood. Now you have to replace the fenders too.

 

Talk to a body shop and they will set you straight. Example.

 

Not sure how that wouldnt protect from limbs and trees which is what it was made to protect against. Hence the name "brush guard".

 

I own a damage multiplier myself. I’m totally a hypocrite for slandering it.

I know it’s bad for the truck in case of an accident. But I like how it looks so I keep it. I have a Relentless Fab plated winch bumper going on soon.

You’re right, I meant in any sort of collision. I’m sure they work wonders protecting the front end from small bushes.

 

It's all good to have one for looks. Only issue is if you do get in small front end collision and don't have aftermarket parts covered under insurance. The body shop can say the additional damage was caused by an after market installed part allowing insurance to deny your claim. Then your stuck with a repair bill.

 

Oh if I crash into something I’m screwed. I only have liability insurance.

Why? Insurance on a 20 year old truck is cheap. For me anyways, I only pay $60/month for full coverage, $500 deductible. It was only $40/month for liability only.

I was paying $150 a month on my truck for full coverage last year with a $1000 deductible. 32 years old, no accidents on record and no tickets in the last 5 years. CA is as expensive as everyone makes it out to be.
