Do you happen to know some of the actual paint thickness measurements they found? For reference for other BBP owners.

    Did you ever wash it?

Seems easy to prevent this by washing it regularly then applying a simple spray wax to the hood and roof. Might take 5 minutes.

Dont have any pictures yet but my 17 bbp is doing this as well. Kind of starts off as two racing stripes at the forward portion of the roof and continues back a good way. Was gonna wash and try some cleaner wax on Saturday to see if that removed the issue. Now after seeing this thread I dont think I should mess with it until the dealership sees it.

Edit.... just got off the phone with the service advisor, have an appt for 5 today for them to look at it.

Thats not really a good suggestion. Thats the kind of thing Toyota would say. If one color can go 20 years with hardly any fading in a climate. And another color needs to be waxed weekly or it will fade in 2 years... Well that isn't a realistic suggestion.

I’m really questioning the thought process and logic of this statement.....

I would think it's even more important now for you to do that. Just keep it coated. When one coating wears off re-coat. If you want to get an idea of how prone your truck is to this happening you can have a shop check the thickness.

I just asked my service advisor if he has seen any of these blazing blue pearl trucks with paint issues. He said they recently had about 10 trucks come through with this issues.

He also said Toyota was having them just paint the roof and hood, but is now having them paint the whole truck.

Do the ceramic coating and film protection. If you get the right brand, it’s guaranteed for some 10 years on film and 7 on coatings.

I agree, this is what I did to mine. Makes it real easy to clean it.

Welcome to the world of Toyota paint...its always been a weakness.
Just bought a 2015 2nd Gen....first thing I did was clay bar, buff out the swirls, ceramic sealer and wax (it's black too, so even worse). PITA but will pay dividends later. Every yota I've owned had junk for paint.
    Cheers, Jeff

This sucks...a re-spray/re- paint wont be factory on bare metal. Toyota will fix it for the least amount of money...Buy back would be the best option...Went through this poop with Acura..of course I got a re-spray..Paint was never the same..total waste...Buy back wasn't an option for me...Good Luck OP

Quick update, went to dealership yesterday and had the service advisor and service manager look at truck and take pictures all over. Asked me if I'd ever been in an accident and I wanted to say yep but I only flipped completely over and slid on hood and roof but I held my smartass in. They then told me their warranty manager was on vacation until next week and that corporate would have to do an investigation and take paint thickness measurements. The service manager also said he hadn't seen anything like this but he definitely thought it was a lack of clear coat or an application issue. So hopefully by the end of next week I'll have some idea of the next step. Gonna wash the truck Saturday and look over every painted part to make sure they dont miss anything. So far it's only the roof and hood. I did notice an issue with the roof like the second time I washed it but just assumed it was tree sap and would just fix it when I got around to waxing. Now that I think of it the hood has always been dull and hazy even after washing. Never put much thought into it until now.

Buyback seems to make most sense. Others posted they would opt for a new model up trade.

What I've gathered is that this is affecting 17 model year Tacos made in Mexico. Chances are they were all made in the same few days and it was a bad batch of paint or improper application that wasn't caught .

Weird, my moms 1994 land cruiser (tan) and my own 2002 is300 have phenomenal paint. The cruiser going on 24 years with no fade as of yet. Yes original paint. Waxed maybe 4 times a year? Not a garage queen either. Im thinking its newer vehicles that have junk paint. Honda and toyota in particular. Honda has it pretty bad.... Maybe these new water based paints are inferior.

So this is only my second vehicle purchase new and Ive not had any warranty issues so far, how does that process work? Would that even be an option? Im completely fine with a repaint as long as everything matches like it should and there is some sort of decent warranty included for the new work.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
This is exactly what I was thinking --not to be aloof --but hoping it will not affect my 17 Texas built AC. Now if we could get Toyota to come forward and tell what series and VIN's this affects.

I would trade mine in if it looked like that. Try to get Toyota to give some trade assist. But if they are going to paint my whole truck, I am picking the bodyshop, not them.
