I don't know the details about how thick the bore sleeves are, but usually when the manufacturer says "can't be repaired" what they mean is "by us".

    Ask a good machinist.

Drop-in a 1KD-FTV...your trans will bolt right to it. Its a 3.0L Toyota turbo diesel.

It sounds like the problem is that the original liners are thin AND the block is actually poured around them.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_GR_engine

"This engine has special cast-iron cylinder liners cast into the block, which are a spiny type to improve adhesion between the liner and cylinder block. With these special thin liners it is impossible to bore the block."

Find out the laws in your state. For most of the US, an engine swap is problematic if you want to register it legally. Because of pollution laws since 1984 you can't put a different engine in it than it was built with unless the pollution technology on the new engine is better than the old one. It must pollute less than the original as new engine.

If it's only going to run off road, you should be fine.

The 2.8 max torque is 266 and requires extensive modification. The 1KD-FTV requires much less and conforms to the laws.

But it was fun to read! Maybe the OP learned how to check the coolant level since then.
