pits are not to blame, it's poor ownership/training. remember, guns don't kill people...

Weak analogy. Guns are inanimate objects. Pits are very animated and can lock down on a puppies head and crush its skull. Fortunately, the pit owner, and the puppies owner, were able to wrestle the pit enough to release his jaw from the puppies face. I’m glad I was not there. I might have done something stupid in my rage at seeing this poor defenseless puppy being mauled! Blame the owner all you want, but I had a neighbor with a pit who was a sweety, too. I wouldn’t let my dog play with her. A couple times before I made that decision they were playing but the pit got over excited and became quite rough. I will never trust a pit.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
That’s one fine looking pup right there!
Similar thing happened to my dog Blue. He passed away about 3yrs ago and was a 16yr old Catahoula.
That dog was stout. He too was mauled almost to death as a pup, by my xwifes sister’s Chow. Her dog was trained, but straight up was an ass towards other animals.
It’s about training, the owner, the owners training, and genetics.
My dog Blue, bounced back from the injury and later became a tank. We did not skip a beat, he saw that same dog later that day and almost every week. Hell yes I was pissed as f$ck, but I did not let Blue see that. In fact we bonded even more so after the event. Tough as nails that pup was...that damn chow crushed my dogs muzzle and he could not breath. I had to stick straws down his broken nose until we got to the vet.

I do remember when Blue was in his prime, and that old chow was on its last leg. My dog never allowed her to push him around.
    Keep his head up!

    You my boy Blue!

FYI - my new pup Huck, which some of you have seen. His best friend Herbie is a Pitbull that was chained to a HVAC unit and left for dead.
It’s true, some dogs definitely are purpose built and they like any animal will show you it’s teeth.
Mainly, the owners ability to set the stage for the pup to grow into a good dog is where it’s at.
Oh and that Pit I mentioned, is very nervous around people and other dogs. It’s a shame people get dogs and treat them like they are something shiny and new. Most people should not own a dog IMO, as they are too busy with life to put in the time needed.

I don’t trust people. I will trust any dog over a person, any day of the week. :)

From a history of and description of the pitbull breed:" Pitbulls were initially bred to track down and catch — literally, hold down animals until their master arrived — wild boar and wild cattle. In time, the some breeders started emphasizing attributes that improved their prowess in the dog fighting arena.

So, deep down, the typical Pitbull is animal aggressive, and has an aggressive temperament at its core."

I personally cannot verify the veracity of this excerpt. But have experienced pitbull dogs from across the spectrum of loving to mean as hell... The nature versus nurture argument will continue as always I suppose. Frankly, I chose to learn vicariously, and will not allow my canine family anywhere this unpredictable breed.

I’ve heard a bit of everything about Pits but probably more than not they error on the side of being dog aggressive. I had a friend growing up that had a huge Pit that went crazy every fall and killed every dog in the neighborhood. As it turns out it had “seasonal affective disorder” or so the vet said. Nothing they did would calm this dog during that time and even fencing it up wouldn’t work because it would chew through the fence. After killing dozens of dogs they had to put it down. My next door neighbor had one that was just mean all the time but my 150 pound German/Shiloh Shepard could handle him when he came to our yard, but he wreaked havoc on the rest of the dogs.

I love all dogs and that includes pits but I don't let my dogs near them. To many pits are owned by people that don't train them and that leads to problems.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
So let me get this straight. A person was walking by on public property with a dog under control. Your buddies dog and his neighbors dog were not under control, and ran at the ball towards the other dog, and it's the other dog and owner's fault? I never want to hear about a dog attack, and I'm saddened that puppy may be scarred forever, but I blame your buddy and his neighbor for not having full control of their dogs. Play in the back yard in the fence. That other dog could have been a bait dog, abused, what not, and may have acted out of defense. Even so, it still needs exercise and walks. It is a sad story either way. I pray for a quick recovery and no lasting affects on your buddies dog.

Unfortunately, that's really not how it works. A pit is a dog bred to fight. Of course, training helps but you can never be entirely sure about the behavior even if you keep up the training, the internal prey drive is pretty high as is the fight or flight reflex. A bit like your retriever who brings you stuff to make you throw it-they will retrieve until they drop dead.

While it's true that an owner can have a great impact on any dog's behavior, hereditary instincts can be so strong the dog ignores all correction and all commands given by the owner. Even an owner with strong command presence may not have enough to overcome. There are examples both of pits mauling owners (to death in a couple of recent cases) and of patrol dogs who will not let go of a suspect despite repeated commands to let go. If I recall correctly, one of the patrol dog bites was of the handler.

Anyhow, dogs are unlike guns in that they are driven by fight/flight/prey drive. Guns are not.

I should add that all of this does not make pits bad dogs. But owners need to be aware of the breed and what triggers they have. Especially around other small animals and kids, and adults.

My dog was attacked by different dogs over the years I had her, I also have been bitten by dogs.
Not one of the attacks was by a pit bull!
That's why most areas have leash laws, so owners can control their dogs. ..

I hope the puppy heals quickly with no permanent damage, I'm very sorry to hear about this.
