So I did what you did to yours. Good news and bad news. The shifter is easy to move now in all gears. But now when I stop the truck "jolts" like its slipping out of gear. Its just one jolt each time I stop. Any thoughts?!

That "jolt" when stopped is actually normal.... Theres lots of info on it here on tw. I only read a little on it as it worried me at first as well..... But its completely normal.... Feel like someone tapping your rear bumper?

Yea, that little jolt is normal. Look around on here, they tell you what it is. I stopped reading when i learned it was normal.... No need for concern. You may not have felt it before because your nss wasnt working properly

Thanks, I will monitor it for now. I ordered a NSS switch from Ebay and should be here some time mid next week. I will let you know how it goes after I install it.

Just be mindful when installing that it is adjustable, so you may need to adjust it a few times before you get the desired operation.

Appreciate the tip on it being adjustable. That is easy to forget with things like this.

Mine needs adjusting I think. How do I go about adjusting it the best way? Do I loosen the bolt up and tweak it that way?

    Wmchenry02,
Did you ever get to the bottom of the “jolt”? I flushed my transmission and didn’t follow the proper procedure to ensure the fluid level was correct when I was done. If I braked really hard I’d get a bang like I’d been rear ended. Turns out my Transmission fluid level was down by 1.5 quarts. Just fixed it yesterday, no more thunk or bang when I brake really hard.

When I started this thread a little over 2 yrs ago, I was having trouble with the neutral safety switch on my 05 Tacoma. I solved the problem, thanks to a gentleman on this site, by spraying penetrating oil around the switch. Well here it is 2 years later and the problem is back. Hard shifting into drive and wanting to pop out of gear into neutral. The check engine light also came on. I tried the same fix, but this time the check engine light stayed on, but the shifter works better. Anyone try using an aftermarket NSS? Much cheaper than the one from Toyota or Autozone.

Update on the NSS problem. I took the truck for a short spin, came home, shut the engine off, turned the key back on, and voila, the check engine light was not on. Shifter works smoothly. So, the moral of this story is, try this solution before going out and buying a new safety neutral switch.
