Funny you mention that about trucks in general... We bought my wife a new corolla two+ years ago, and it's been a pretty great car so far. She drives the crap out of it to and from work and it's got over 55K on it already. I don't drive it much, but drove it a couple weeks ago and it had the same exact issue, just not as jerky as a heavy ass 4x4 tacoma. After asking her about it, she has noticed it too, just didn't say anything about it on her own. And that car seems to have a similar transmission pattern to the Tacoma in terms of hunting for gears and pausing before hard acceleration. Maybe there's a Corolla TSB too, lol!! When it happened with my truck, my mental response was - what the hell? I had to absolutely FEATHER the pedal coming off a coast to not have it jerk into acceleration. This was the feeling I am used to with old cars with lots of miles on them, as I've noticed it in other older vehicles, even manuals (when not using the clutch during the coast and accelerate process at slower speeds). My truck did not do it brand new, but it seemed to develop mostly over the 5k-10k mile range. The initial feedback from the very limited miles so far is that it has been improved noticeably. Hope it stays that way!

I've read here that they can NOT install an old ECU calibration. The "system" only lets the techs install the latest ECU software.

In fact, I think I read in this thread (or one of the other various tsb threads) that someone recently had the old 77-16 written on their paperwork but 58-18 had actually been installed. I think the service writer referenced 77-16, as that was the "solution" they thought matched. But when the tech actually did the work, 58-18 was installed. Don't quote me on that, but seems I remember reading that just recently on TW (in the last few days).

This would make the most sense for my case and instill a smidgeon more confidence in my local dealer's service dept!:) Will hopefully find out Thursday when they fix my leaf springs and blower motor... UGH!

In my 2012 and 2014, I always noticed it most when driving fast on side streets, where I had to "yield" at every single intersection. Accelerate through the block, slow down and coast through each intersection, then accelerate after you get over the "hump" of the road, and then the rpm's would just go nuts. Like it shoulda stayed in 3rd but instead it's in 1st.

I haven't noticed this as much in the 3rd gen. But it's there once in awhile. Since I noticed it in multiple 2nd gens, and a little bit in 3rd gen, it makes me think its there for a reason (ie. It thinks we have weight in the bed). Which would make sense.

I haven't done much hauling with my 2018, but I always felt my 2nd gens drove sooo much better with 350 lbs in the back end.

Ended up getting the updated for the erratic shifting and stuff yesterday while getting my pre-collision system fixed. The truck just turned mundane and sluggish outside of ECT mode. It feels like trying to take off in 5th gear from a stop and coming out of a turn it feels like nothing.

I agree with this, but can also say that even though I was one of the one's who did not get a sticker, the immediate difference in the way the engine responded was very clear and evident. Not only to myself but friends and family who also noticed the issues immediately when riding in my taco. One thing that was definitely NOT there anymore was the lag from WOT off the start that almost killed my family and I..... is absolutely not there anymore! I am exactly 3k miles after the TSB.

Short story: 100% Much better driving experience.
No abnormal surge, Smooth shifting in town and on highway, holds gear longer and therefore easily maintains speed uphill.

    Long story:
So yesterday i got the ECU reflashed to their latest TSB 0062-18. They drove 10 miles per mileage pics i took before/after.
Driving in town from the dealership to home, it was noticeably smoother and kinda the truck felt light because the trottle response and acceleration was smooth, not jerky or surge acceleration.

This morning going on highway, it felt smooth and lean. Going up hill where the truck usually struggles to maintain speed on same pressure on the gas pedal. It now holds gear and moves smooth. I didn’t need to apply more pressure on the gas pedal to maintain speed which results in surge of accelration then drops then i have had to repeat. It used to struggle keeping 60-65mph with light pedal pressure going on uphill, not anymore.

I dont understand how others experience their truck reverting back to the sh*tty acceleration. Hope mine doesn’t. Pretty sure ECU reflash are permanent update unless new ones applied over it.

Will keep updating you guys but for now I’m very satisfied. The truck drives like it should!!!!

Also, changed the turn signal blinker from 3-6 blinks. Charged me $57.50.
They couldnt disable door chime, said its part of safety module? Which is part of seatbelt etc..etc..

I had the update and the moment I drove off the lot it felt like a night and day difference. Throttle response to me was improved by 100% and not getting that “dead pedal” feeling. Shifting reminded me of how my old 11’ 4Runner would shift and drive and the power band was definitely improved. I feel like there’s more power in the low RPM range. Gear hunting has been incredibly mitigated. It still likes 6th gear but it doesn’t bother me much because the overall satisfaction with how it drives now is just great. Those are my .02.

Super happy with the TSB update and I had the 58 one done.

So I got it done! I did have to fight for it, but they did it.
    Bullet points:
    • Took it in a my scheduled time 9am. -
    • Explained issues to the guy that greeted me and also my concern they wouldn't do the update because it didn't show up on my VIN
    • I then showed him the PDF with my VIN mentioned - He smiled and said, "no problem. We'll get it done for you."
    • 40 minutes later, the service manager comes to me in the waiting room... "I have bad news..." I stopped him and said, sorry I'd like this done. He said it was impossible, everything is up to date. I said impossible because my truck was born 2 months prior to the update, and showed HIM the PDF. He said, "I'm really sorry, let me bring you the computer to show you how it's not possible."
    • I waited about 15 minutes and he came back and said, "I'm really sorry, you're right. We were able to find a more current update than your PDF that came out on the 29th of July which includes all updates... and we've already installed it." He apologized about 4 more times.
    • 10:15am I drove away in a truck that definitely shifts more smoothly! :taco: Although I didn't get to drive it much yet.
BUT...Here's the print out he gave me. I just noticed next to Issue Date it says, July 4th. - Maybe this wasn't the most current update. I'm not sure what the numbers mean but hopefully they did do ALL of the correct updates...

I’m taking my truck in next Friday September 28th and pulled the calibration ID from the truck before going in, the current ID is 896650401300. I will be checking the Cal ID once I pick it up post update to confirm that a new flash to the ecu has been applied

Today drove some more in town and on highway. And I now have another word for TSB-0062-18, i call it “Refined ECT mode”.

Had this done today. A noticeable difference, night and day. The truck feels like there is something behind the pedal now. No more wondering if there will be a response when you need it. The dealer was a bit hesitant to do it, making excuses that the master tech wasn't sure that this was the issue. But they did it after a bit of back and forth. Also, had it for a possessed door lock; new lock ordered have to go back to get that installed. Couldn't leave it over night. Happy with the update, interested in how my overall MPG is impacted.

20180921_144851.jpg Gave it a few days and what a difference.
First they said they would have to mimic the issue, but ended up doing it anyway.
Got a question, what do they mean by 'there is a super session to this TSB'?

I have been living with the update for a while now and I have noticed the anti-slip system takes a little longer to engage.
There is a specific corner that is slippery when wet and the Tacoma has negotiated it with almost no slip for 40k miles.
After the update I get a 1/2 second more slip...

This would be a major hazard if this holds true.

I haven't noticed anything yet on dirt roads, but we already have snow on the ground and in the forecast and will need to see.

Had my '18 updated with the TSB this morning and unfortunately, I can't say it is a night and day difference. It's "maybe" better? In fact I had a hard time telling if it felt better only because I had a tailwind on the way home. They didn't say which TSB # was applied, the invoice only says EG1810. In town it would still keep upshifting until it was lugging around 1000 rpm, and on the highway it seemed to cruise a little better at 70 with less hunting, but color me unimpressed by the whole thing. When I got home I re-installed my SSPv2. (which I pulled out before heading to the dealer, I just didn't want to deal with any flak about it)

My paper work said the exact same thing so I checked it with a OBDII meter and verified the CAL ID# was what the TSB said it should be and it was. There was talk on here that tech stream will only let the dealer update to the latest ECU software and not an older one so perhaps that is true. At least with mine it was.
