Looking for recommendations for a phone mount/holder. Want something close to eye level without obscuring the dash view at all. Any recommendation?

last night i finished a track slide mount system that worked great. DIY for sure. took pics but decided was of little interest to forum so did not post. but i think you are asking exactly for what i did. it is not all things to all people but it is fine for me and i think for you. if you want to mount an ipad or 65" HDTV this is not for you. and cheap...but some DIY smarts necessary.
    post coming...

BTW: beware magnets - it was my first inclination - but i was able to fool devices by waving magnets near them. wave a magnet at an iphone running a compass app..and how about the built in compass on the truck...where is that sensor? my effort is general and i decided to stay away from magnets since not sure what i will mount in future. right now i mount a gamin gps and iphone.

Here is a DIY. Came out pretty well. Suitably flexible but not ugly when not in use. I made sure mounted devices do not block any view of road. They don't
intrude above hood line. larger displays might run into a problem there.

I used a standard from a cheap shelf system (we've all seen them) which coincidentally had a lip on it that my slides could grab.
I looked at the standards at home depot and they no longer have that lip...so some creativity to get yourself a track is required.
Should not be hard to walk around home depot and spy something that will work.
    ...or use someting like this:
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/24-Aluminu...5-16-T-Bolts/151866370377?hash=item235bf0e949

I ordered a couple of suction mounts from ebay and disassembled to just use the grabber portion. It was a very good mount in its own
    right:
[SOMETHING FUNNY WITH THIS EBAY LINK...I'LL SNAP PIC AND ADD TO END OF PICS.] It should still be available..or use something else.

See pic of the threaded stem glides from home depot that I ground down to create the slides.

I think the rest is self explanatory...not the greatest pics but they should work.
I just made 2 brackets (one for gps and one for old iphone i use for wifi display of ODBII gauges). I can make more as needed.
You can swivel and bend the brackets to get the best angles (like for glare) but it is not completely flexible..mostly though.
...and some black spray paint. Put some electrical tape on the bottom of the bracket
so there is no painted metal on painted metal contact when sliding into position.

Overall cost was under $20 i think...the most going toward buying the grippers.
Major Tools I used were a drill press, grinding wheel and vice (for bending bracket) but you'd get away with a hand drill and belt sander.

    hth...phil
ps. what appears to be scratches is actually cat hair. i have a feline helper buddy.

yeah the guy that did that did a great job and looks good for big displays. only prob i had with it is once you get the ball extender/connectors etc it starts to get pricey. at least that was my impression.
did you find that to be true?

I guess so, I mean...i never really shopped around for phone holders in the past. This one checked all the boxes for me, its out of sight if you want it to be, no sticky crap anywhere, no magnets, it has strong structural support, it utilized ball/ram style mounts, it was in a good position to be plugged in while on the mount, it lets me navigate my phone with my right hand, it does not block a vent what so ever, and it does not block any usable windshield visibility. For a complete setup for 1 phone it cost me $93. Maybe that was high, i don't know, and I don't care, it was the one holder that checked all my boxes.

I did notice he does have a sale going on right now, price might be closer to your range

Check out Proclip - I've been using them on all of my cars for the past several years, they're great.

I'll second the mob armor. I found them when I was looking for a cell phone holder on my motorcycle. Very sturdy holder and mount options. I've used the ram mount and magnet mount, both worked really well. Used on a DRZ400 and DR650, also in my truck.

They're expensive, but magnets would always drop my phone if I ever left the pavement. Mob armor hasn't let me down over some gnarly terrain.

The clock bezel worked well for me as a mounting spot, space is pretty limited in the 1st gens. Picked up a clock delete bezel off ebay and it fit a Ram mount perfect.

As a bonus, if you're in CO and get stuck on I-70 it can flip sideways and you've got a great way to watch movies...

I have the suction cup versions of these. Mounted far left on the glass and my phone sits sideways perfectly, resting partly on the dash over the cluster. Perfect position and landscape mode is better for Waze. Totally happy with them. Buy the two pack and you have a spare for your office desk.
