Super newb question here. I have a Lincoln 140 I have been practicing with using flux core. I want to jump up to using gas. I bought the welder used so I don’t have the user manual. I do have the regulator with hose, but what else do I need to transition to gas? Any help is appreciated.

A bottle of 75/25 co2 argon mix (if you’re doing mostly mild steel) and a spool of solid wire. Das it :D. You’ll have to change the polarity inside your machine as well

Thanks! What size wire? Mainly doing 1/8” +/- steel, and also do I need a different contact tip (I think that’s what it’s called) than what I’m using for flux?

    No problem. I use .030

You can find lincoln superarc L56 at Home Depot or Lowe’s very easily which is the wire you’ll need. You’ll just need to buy matching sized contact tips with whatever size wire you buy but you don’t need different ones for solid wire

You can go to Lincolns Website and download the users manual Always good to have .

Had you seen this work using hard wire when you bought it?

Great question. This is my bolt on set. Where the bolt would line up to go through the existing hole in the frame is further to the front of the bracket on that frame mount so I put the gusset on the other side so it doesn’t interfere with where the bolt head is located. And the reason I don’t just move the leg back a little bit is because the bracket would make contact with a couple little things on the frame.

So for the DCLB bolt on sets the gussets look like this from front to back \ / \ \

Buddy has used his mill in the past but does almost all of his notching on a dedicated setup now. Just easier. A drill press might have to much play in the spindle to do a hole saw really well unless using a pilot bit type hole saw.

I know a dude at work that was using a 4” hole saw on some wood and because there was too much play in the spindle/chuck it yanked the piece of material clear out of the clamp and walked his hand right towards the hole saw and before he knew it his entire thumb was on the ground. They couldn’t save his thumb so a year later they took off his big toe and put it on his hand so he could have a thumb. Toe thumb thing?

Yes . But a 1960s style one that weighs more than a car and has a bridgeport like table and a rotating head. Basically was a poor man's milling machine at one point I'm assuming . Or just a really nice drill

Thanks for the feedback guys. I don't want a toe thumb so I'll leave the press as a press.

Id definitely doable...especially if you only have a couple simple notches to make. But get into longer pieces or different angles/offsets and it gets tricky
