I bought my 2017 TRD OR AT about 3 weeks ago with a little over 15000 miles on it. I work from home up in the hills about 1200 feet about water level. That’s a 25 minute drive between my home and the city and I’m constantly seeing an average of about 19 mpg on the dash. I did notice the shifts at odd times right away and did some research so I reached out to service to see if those TSBs 58 Rev 1 and 62 can help. I don’t understand the reason behind driving it long distance though before one could get a good average run on the mpg. Is it supposed to learn your driving style?

What do you think you really got?

If you're thinking you got 15-20 I dobut it. Remember you start at 0.

2 blocks is not much time to get a high end average

I have 2k on my truck and I pulled in the driveway this morning averaging 21.9mpg on the lie o’ meter. That’s about 1mpg higher then normal, but I put 89 in it so....there is that.

I live in FL so it is mostly flat. In D I can get 18-24 around town driving.. On my last trip up north I ran ECT through NC/WV and averaged around 22mpg.

The update seemed to make a difference in the beginning, but I get some stumbling here and there after about 2k miles from getting the update. One thing I do notice in my truck is that if I disable traction control, the truck shifts much smoother with a lot less hunting/shifting and there is no stumbling.

To me, it seems that traction control is over reacting and trying to up shift ASAP to get the truck at a lower RPM to keep traction at a max. (just my theory) In traffic around town, my truck likes to get to 1k rpm as soon as possible.

Interesting thought about traction control. I'll keep that in mind for my next highway trip

The traction control doesn’t change the shift points. It cuts power and/or applies brake on the affected wheel(s). If it activates you will get a light on the dash. I’m not sure we can blame this stumbling on traction control.

For the guys experiencing the truck actually not accelerating with pedal input I would want an oscilloscope pattern from the APP sensors.

Just had them update the TSB - truck appears to drive better. Slightly better throttle response, and no gear hunting on the way to work this morning. Usually I drive it in ETC mode, but today I didn't and it felt pretty good.

Fingers crossed it stays this way.

Well it definitely makes a difference in my driving experience around town when it is off compared to when it is on. I get stumbling from time to time and odd shifts when activated. With it off the truck drives more like you would expect any vehicle.

I called my Tacoma dealership to schedule an appointment to have this firmware updated. I have a 2017 TRD and noticed the lag when punching it at around 40mph. However the manager said the “technician” will drive it and see if anything is wrong with it like “I’m saying” before they order anything to be done through warranty. Because “warranty” pays for their service to be done on “things like this”. How hard is it to have this firmware updated? Did you guys have to struggle to get it done or is there some type of numbers that should be projected on a data sheet reflecting the discrepancy? I have a feeling I’m going to have to explain myself more than I should when it seems members have had it done in 15 minutes with no questions.
Also, I have a 6” lift so I wonder if that would be thrown in as a reason why it’s delayed response and not needed an update.
    Any input appreciated

Seems like it depends on who you talk to. The first service guy I talked to tried to give me the runaround, but I had printed the TSBs that I wanted looked at, and told them its a safety issue and should be under warranty. He passed me off to someone else (because I don't think he knows the front end of a truck from the ass end) and the second guy was like "Oh yeah, I've done about 3 this week already. What kind of symptoms do you have? Ok great, we'll check it out."

Some meet lots of resistance. Some meet no resistance. And a whole lot of in between.

Dropped mine off today for its 15k service and to have a block heater installed, asked for this to be done as well. Here’s hoping, the hesitation before getting full power is getting annoying and I’m worried it’ll be dangerous once the snow falls this winter.

If you're going in during a routine service visit one way to ask for the update is requesting a 'health check' on the ecu. I think it means they plug in with their scan tool, verify everything looks OK, and check for software updates if available.

I would also specifically describe the symptoms and mention the related TSBs with the reflash as the fix.

On top of that explain the symptoms as a safety issue (hesitation when pulling into traffic). The combination of these reasons usually get through the service advisors.

If that doesn't work ask to speak to the service manager

Had this updated today at the dealer service department, thanks to the information found on this thread.

I stated I had experienced a stumble when driving over a pass recently. The service advisor understandably said they would have to confirm the symptoms match, but once I gave him the TSB info (which they appreciated) they didn’t give me any resistance. I confirmed the software version was correct on the paperwork when picking up the vehicle.

Only a few miles on the way home so far, but I can feel a difference already. Looking forward to my commute tomorrow so I can get a feel for what has changed.

I had the TSB done the day after it came out and after about 1500 miles on the TSB the truck was back to its same old ways, driving like crap. I cleared the trans learning today and the truck drives amazing. I have been doing this since day 1 on this truck. And, i have been saying this since day 1. People will always report great success after a trans flash or whatever, but its NOT because the updated really fixed anything. Its only because the LEARNING got cleared. Everytime the learning gets clear the truck drives great, but then always reverts back to crap. I have a feeling the issue is with the learning. Not really sure what going on, but the truck drives great again after a full trans learning reset. Im so god damn sick of this. Get your act together toyota!!

I'm pretty confident that a lot of people are asking for a tsb because they read it here, not because they are actually experiencing it.
