What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I am looking for suggestions on what I need to fix.

Over the last month, I have been hearing sounds, a whine or groan that decreases in pitch as the speed drops. Occasionally with an increase in vibration through a range. So this morning on the commute in, If I let off at 65 it starts from 55 down, some vibrations around the 45-38 mph range. It is repeateable. I also noticed something similar but lower in pitch when letting off at 73-70 mph. This was repeatable on the commute in. However when I got off, got in traffice, had some stop and start (things cooled down?) then it was not so noisy.

Is this the CV joints or something? There is not a noticeable increase in pitch vibration when accelerating.
Also if I hold speed things seem fine. As soon as I let off the gas, coast and or brake I hear the groaning. I also feel the vibrations at certain ranges in the floor, my left foot on the floor to the left of the brake.

Are the CV joints supposed to get repacked/lubed? This kind of went away or was dimised for a week after I got a lube job. However it returned soon enough. We have also have had flooding and I have driven through water...

 

That is very true. Lots of people go there that shouldn't. Doesn't make it a hard trail though just means people or stupid.

How the two people died last year on Morrison too. Brand New utv. Only had it for two weeks. That's not a beginner trail at all either. Paid the price sadly..

Sounds like a U joint to me

 

Could be a wheel bearing as well.

Your profile says you have a Prerunner. If that’s accurate I can guarantee you don’t have bad CV axels.

You'll need at least one functioning locker if you want to see the best Colorado has to offer. I.E. not the Alpine loop.

 

All this talk about wheeling and I’ve only used 4WD once in the new truck.

Is your new truck push button ADD? I’m guessing you didn’t have Manual Hubs on your other truck.

What tools are needed for wheel bearing replacement?

 

depends on front or rear.

Front isn't too bad to DIY. just need one specialty tool and a press.

The rear is a bit more difficult as to press out the old bearings is a pain without the right rig to hold the backing plate while pressing on the axle shaft..which barely fits in a cheap HF press. Then just have to be very careful about setting the retainer rings right.

 

I am also seeing various discussions about just replacing the entire hub assembly. That would seem like the way to go without the specialty tool and press.

OTOH, a press may come in handy ...

And where are people ordering OEM parts from online these days?

Also, if I do the LBJs at the same time, should I bother getting new bushings from then?

 

Used my winch on the truck to lift my hammock 10 feet in the air. Feels nice to lay down so I high up

I saw a Suzuki Samurai for sale at the local Pick-n-Pull. Fun looking off-road car.

 

I am afraid people would be bored by it since it is basically just body work. If I decide to do any custom front end setup, I might. TBD on $$$.

Made some progress this morning. Gonna get the tractor out after lunch and do some "exploratory pulling" on the front end. I'd like to save the radiator supports and that front body panel due to all of the spot welded brackets I wouldn't have to reattach.

My biggest fear was the relay box had severe damage. Yes, it did. May still be functional, but the housing is damaged pretty bad. Frame is okay (body mount tore loose relieving strain). Upr/Lwr control arms fine.

 

Ahhh that thing is fine. Just get a new fender apron, radiator support, and front end.

Just curious, you bought that from a junkyard? I assume it’ll carry a salvage title.
