And that's the thing . I guess the rigids generate a ton of watts and actually make heat.

Here's the real question . Is it enough to melt, or only enough to melt contacting snow and then ice them over haha

 

I've always wondered why aftermarket LED pods/bars etc need such big heat sinks if LEDs run so cool

 

I think it's for the electronics/ drivers and less so the led at the front of the housing.

 

No idea what that means. Haha

Yeah, anyone who doesn't think there is heat in LED's hasn't owned high power LED flashlights. I have a bunch of Surefire, Fenix and Nitecore flashlights that will burn you if you aren't careful. They have warnings on them and everything.

That's exactly correct. LED's produce a lot of heat, but from the base of the unit, where the drivers are, so they have to put a bunch of cooling fins there to keep them from overheating. Halogens produce even more, but it's from the filament (and therefore the lens side) so they do a better job of not icing up.

 

Was on my way home from work last night and saw a white armored 2nd gen (??? was dark couldn't tell exactly) pulling out of the fire road off rt175 in Plymouth, NH between to Irving and Citgo...any takers?

Would make so much sense to be able to channel that heat to the surface to prevent icing. Then again, I only had that issue once last year, Chirstmas Eve. You remember that Noel... I drove to Boothbay because my dad told me it wouldn't be freezing so close to the coast. I drove in pouring rain and 29F temps the entire way, right until I got to his house which is 15 feet from the water. Could be the worst driving conditions I ever saw. Lights froze up but so did everything. I don't think halogens would have done a whole lot better.

 

I do remember that storm. We had a family Christmas that night in Gardiner that we took the F150 to. FWIW, the headlights (LED) froze but the foglights (Halogen) didn't. On the other hand, the foglights were in a much smaller housing than the headlights, so the bulbs were correspondingly closer to the lens. But yeah, everything else on the truck froze; I had a 1 inch blade-shaped icicle on the back side of my antenna by the time we got home

I'm anxious to see how the F150 does in the winter. I have heated everything and remote start which should be nice.

I'm leaning toward Cooper AT3 4S tires now (Maybe AT3 W). Eventually I'll make a final decision!
