I use the same method and have purchased at least twelve new vehicles with this approach, including three Hondas and four Toyotas. When the last dealership is standing, and the others quit returning communication, then it is time to buy. Though, wasn't quite as aggressive on the 2018 Tacoma as in past purchases. I wanted inferno and there were only a few remaining within a reasonable driving distance. I really wanted inferno and MT, but the closest trucks were 600+ miles away and those dealers wouldn't get aggressive on discount.

The internet is your friend and don't be scared to drive a couple hundred miles to get what you want. I've bought my last 3 Tacomas and my wife's Tahoe online without ever going to the dealership until I am ready to pick up the vehicle. Heck, most local Toyota dealers (SE NC and Myrtle Beach) are willing to bring what I buy to my house or work without going to the dealership. Once you get a firm offer sheet in an email, send it around to all the dealers and play them off one another. I had one dealer tell me he would be better off buying trucks from Fred Anderson Toyota in Raleigh at the price they quoted me because he can't sell them as cheap as Fred Anderson can. Guess what, at the end of the month they call me and match the Fred Anderson price. Sales is a game and don't be afraid to play. If you have good credit you can get most dealers to give you a price you are comfortable with after a little back and forth.

Did it feel like all the dealers you talked to had the same sales training? I kept getting the same generic responses from different salesman at different dealers. I also had one say take the deal I can’t match that price, their numbers must be off to sell for this price. Then he came down 500 off that price he couldn’t touch.

Yep, the Wilmington and Myrtle Beach dealers all said the same thing about the deal from Raleigh. Did have a Toyota dealer in Pinehurst match the Raleigh offer, but every other dealer said they couldn't do the deal and that my numbers must be wrong.

I'm still waiting for this dealer's "Costco rep" to text me about their pricing on a Tacoma. We spoke briefly yesterday and she said she'd be in touch via text. Looking like I may be writing off yet another local dealership today if she doesn't come through. It's the end of the month and I know there are deals to be had. It's incredibly frustrating not knowing.

So I’m in a similar scenario with the cement. There are two left in the state. Does that mean you forfeit a little wiggle room on discount because what I want is so specific?

This thread is amazing. So much good advice

Man I'm also having trouble with Cement. The few I've seen aren't optioned the way I want with premium and tech packages. I'm starting to think maybe I should go with my second choice of blue or white.

    2018 Inferno TRD Offroad Manual
Picked up my inferno 2018 Offroad manual last week. Truck was located in TN. After a couple days of calling/e-mailing back and fourth my local dealer (KS) wouldn't go less than MSRP + 1300 (I'll pay half, he pays half) to haul it and he "was losing $300 at this price" and that "he has to pay his employees and keep the lights on". One e-mail to a different dealer telling him what I wanted, he found the same truck and replies that he'll sell it to me at invoice + 800 to haul it. I was happy with that so didn't even counter negotiate. Had to drive 3 hours to NE to pick it up but I saved a bunch of money on the exact same truck. Sent him a deposit and picked the truck up a couple days later. Was in an out in less than an hour! I got the 1.9% financing. Even told my local dealer about the price prior to giving a deposit and he still said no deal. My local dealer is the stereotypical dealer with all the sleazy tricks and he really wasn't interested in . Should have learned my lesson 2 years ago when we bought our 4Runner there!

That's a good spirit to have! Settling on the 4runner is the main reason why I want to sell it haha, I should learn from that lesson. Color is extremely important.

If you had posted this information last week, I might have an inferno MT today! Haha. Sounds awesome. The few dealers that I talked with about relocating a truck said the same as your local dealer, basically no discounts. I'm sure your truck came from Murfreesboro, when I looked online recently they had several inferno MTs. But again, couldn't find anyone in my area willing to relocate one and give discount, and I didn't have time to make a trip to Tennessee. I'll get my manual transmission fix in a year or two with a pro. Hope you enjoy the truck!

I had my cement in 2 days since they didn't have one at the dealer. All dealers have a locate system that they can plug specifics into. Granted, I work for a dealer, but the response above about doing everything via email and shopping offers will definitely get you your best deal. It is and/or could be a long process. Keep in mind that the person you're speaking with isn't always in control of the pricing, either.

The white one I’m buying in about an hour, what the only white TRD off-road within 150 miles of me, and the dealer new that. It doesn’t matter how many there are or the color, just keep at it. Remember they have to sell cars, you don’t have to buy them. Patience patience patience.

That's shitty. My dealership got back to me like 15 minutes after filling out the application. I used the Costco price against the guy to get $1000 more off MSRP lol

Also check your area, we have 1000 off Tacoma’s when financing through TFS. So you can at least get that off to start, but I like to leave those incentives off and ask for the bottom price then stack on the incentive. The dealer can do this because Toyota gives them that money back after the sale.

Don’t take it personal, I was basically called a liar by one dealer. He said my numbers didn’t add up, I told him look call the other dealer if you don’t believe their quote. You gotta be just as ruthless as them, they wanna take your money, make them work for it.

I’ve also found that dealers get very flustered when you try to cross-shop trucks of the same spec but different colors. For example, when I was shopping I asked one dealer with an MGM SR5 to beat another’s price on a silver SR5 with the same options and their first response was “well which color do you like more?”. They expected me to say it was the MGM they had right in front of me, and I’m sure they’d have used that as leverage for a higher price.

The sales guy didn’t know what to do when I said “I don’t care about color, it’s not like I’ll be driving the truck from the outside looking in”.

I had one dealer straight up call me a liar via email. He didn’t believe I had two other dealers offer 4K off msrp. This was the first week 2018s landed so I guess that didnt help but I wasn’t lying. Lol I forwarded him the quotes and emailed the store manager the email the sales guy sent me. Asked the manager if he trained all his employees to call customers liars. Manager sent a page long response saying how sorry he was. I should have ripped them a new one on google and what not. Oh well ha

    TLDR: Sales people suck.
