I got a letter from the dealer I bought my truck from, saying they have a "special offer". Say I can trade my 2017 for a brand new 2018, for no money out of pocket and "only" an extra $57 a month.

Fine print, for an additional 60mo at 6.5% APR

    Yeah no.

    I just did this. Traded a 2018 Taco OR I had for 5 weeks for a 2018 4Runner Limited.

    Here are the numbers:

I paid $38250 for the Taco OR, premium and tech package in August. I traded it with 2700 miles on it.

They gave me $33500 for it on the trade, and came down $2,000 on the 4Runner sticker.

So not picking the right vehicle the first time cost me $4,750.

I'm 100% happy with the 4Runner. It was a mistake to buy the taco, but getting out of it right away was the right move.

I have a 2016 Sport 4X4 with premium & tech packages. I wanted a Pro, but no such beast in 2016. I now have almost 30k miles and negotiated $31k on trade for a 2019 Pro. I have added Pro wheels/tires, skid plate, Ridgid fogs, homelink mirror, 2015 Pro suspension, black badges. With tax savings $32,860 for trade. I am considering private sale that might get me 35k if I am lucky.

That's a good trade value, imo. If you talk them down on the sticker for the 2019, they'll actually add the amount you talk them down to your trade instead of lowering the purchase cost of the 2019. It saves you on taxes and qualifies the deal for better financing. (if you're going that route)

Regardless of the number you are told, a trade is never a 'good deal' for you.

If they raise the number of the trade to where you want it, the number of the new vehicle will never be as low as it should be.

It's all a shell and pea game, and you have to know who holds the pea.

I just traded my 2018 TRD Sport 4x4 for a new PRO. They gave me $31,500. I see they are selling it for $34,500.

I am paying MSRP on the Pro, no mark up in Iowa, I am number 4 for their 5 allocations and my order has been in for a month. But if it comes with a graphic package, I will try negotiating it off the planned $46300.

I did similar. Traded in a 18 SR5 2wd for a 18 OR 4wd MT. SR5 sale price was 27.7k, gave me 26k for it towards the sale price of 30.9k. Had I just gone for the OR 4x4 the first time, I would have saved 1.2-1.5k OTD. Better to trade in sooner than later and private sale was not going to happen with the deals they were making on new ones.. lesson learned.

    Definitely a lesson learned.

If you determine what you want for your trade, and what you want to pay for the new vehicle, you'll come up with a price difference.

It's not a shell game so long as the price difference stays the same when the deal is written. There are definite tax advantages to having the difference taken into account as trade value instead of lowering the sale price of the new vehicle.

Totally agree. PRO was at MSRP, so sure they're making money there, its all a numbers game from trade to new car price to financing to fees, ttl, etc. However it still was a shit trade offer, even when I traded my 16 for the 17 which wasnt JBL/Tech/Prem I got $32k trade in and paid $36.5k on my $40k MSRP new Taco. Just gotta play the game.

You got a killer deal there. My sticker was $40.5k and paid $36.5k for it. Even after a year and 12k miles only losing $2.7k isnt bad at all. Gotta love Tacos. Hopefully the market remains the same for another 5 years. I fear demand is high now for midsize trucks/tacos but if the tide turns we will see resale take a hit. Oh well, bought my truck cause I love it not because of resale.

The reason I bought the PRO is because I totalled my 2013 TRD Sport. My insurance company paid what it was worth according to a 3rd party estimator, not KBB or NADA. I just knew I was going to get ripped.

When they called me and said that they will pay me $22k, I about fell over. I bought it new in 2013 for $29k. I would say they hold their value or the 3rd party messed up.

This is why I lease popular/ in demand vehicles. I got rid of a Civic, Fit, STI, Impreza, and a couple other leases in way under a year. Because I can get a good deal on them, they are easy to have taken over with no incentive given on my part. Had I bought with cash it would have been much harder and would have lost many thousands on each.

Yep, Taco number 7, they hold value. But have you seen how many there are now? Alot of the high resale is due to demand, if demand changes so will our resale. People are always following the latest trends right now its trucks and SUVs, we will see if that remains the same when most of us go to trade or sell 5-6 years from now. And nice choice on the PRO, have you seen the cost to own, the PRO and Rubicon are ridiculously awesome resale/cost to own.

I constantly am fighting this urge. I get bored and want to try something different sometimes, especially since I don't ride MX anymore and have no need for a truck anymore. But looking at history and my brief flirt outside tacomas I know myself and fight the urge. Can't knock people who have the money to trade every year or two. It's there money and life is too short to be unhappy driving something you don't want and to not drive something you can afford and do want regardless whether you need it or not. But as you allude to I'm betting most people that drive tacoma's dont fall in the bucket of being able to throw the cash away to trade constantly. I certainly am not, but wish and act like I am sometimes lol.

THat $31k is probably just a bit less than it would actually cost then to get a new similarly equipped 2019. Forget all that "dealer invoice" price crap you hear and read about; like any other retailer, a car dealer's cost for their product is 25% to 30% (maybe more for some models) less than MSRP (mattresses and jewelry are exceptions to this, with 100% to even 300+% markup's being common--ever wonder why there are so many mattress stores?).

So, a vehicle with a $42k "sticker price" likely cost the dealer $30k. If the margin were less than other retail sales why would anyone invest in a car dealership?

Correct, most people irresponsibly buy vehicles to begin with.

Life is too short to be broke. I’m not going to put myself in a bad financial situation just because I want to drive a nice car.
Hence the Tacoma. I couldn’t afford another Super Duty and needed to get in something with more modern safety features.
I miss having a real truck everyday but hey a really nice big ass Ford will be in my future again someday.

Dont get me wrong, love the Tacoma, its just not at luxurious as a full size.

I get attached to my truck. When I’ve been with one for years and years I trust it (or know when to stop trusting it lol). I don’t like changing that just to be in something new.

Yep, everytime I get the urge to trade, I give my truck a nice detailing and fall in love with her again. And totally agree, though I could afford right now to trade on something else, "sure its just $50 bucks more a month", I know long term I'm sacrificing / taking a hit on my personal finances for a short term want now. Sucks adulting sometimes. lol.
