So far the weather is really nice, temps are great, and rain chances have dropped a lot...

Yep, I should be close to home all weekend. Do you need just the plastic skin or need the aluminum crash bar too? I have both.

Hey guys. I took my truck into Christian Brothers to get looked at, because it was making a terrible noise coming from the driver side wheel assembly. They took a look and I got quoted for $2.9k. I cannot pay this amount. Bottom line.

Here are the diagnosis notes: “Front wheel bearings and left ball joints destroyed. Recommend all 4 ball joints.
    CV axles slinging grease.

    Front wheel bearings-
    All four control arms-
    CV axles-“

I’m also attaching some photos they’ve included.

I’m not sure what I’m asking, since this is obviously a repair I need. But do I need to pay that full amount or is it okay to only replace certain parts? Do I need to do the repair myself, even tho I hardly know what I’m doing? Is Christian Brothers fucking me in my ass? I know CB cost more, but where I could go to get a better estimate?

Thanks for taking a look guys.

Edit: I’m attaching a picture of the quote.

It’s in the works. Figured I’d install what I have for now while the rest of my money goes towards mall crawler conversion

I can help with some of that....I think.

Wheel bearings are notoriously bad on these trucks. Disclaimer: I have not done this work on these trucks....yet. I need to replace lower ball joints on my truck and plan on doing it this Saturday. I'll need to rent the press to get the old out and the new in. You can get the hub/bearing assembly from @05Taco4x4 or AutoZone. The TW member has good reviews, but AZ has a 20% off coupon and free next day shipping for orders over $100. That would take your total cost down to $155 each after tax. LBJs are $36 each before tax.

So you're looking at about $386 in parts (not including the front axles). I would start there.

I didn't see all 4 control arms in the quote...just the ball joints (2 lower and 2 upper). I've heard of the lowers causing grinding noise, but not the upper. I've also heard of the wheel bearings causing grinding noise, but it's usually toast by the time that happens.

If you want to replace the hub/wheel bearings and LBJs, you're welcome to come over and do them at the same time I do mine. I have the space in the garage and can lend a hand + tools.

If that fixes the problem, great! If not, you can keep going at a later time. Judging by the angle of those axles, I'm guessing you have a decent lift. I'd spring for new UCAs completely to correct alignment before I would replace the upper ball joint. Estimate $450 for SPC UCAs. If problem persists after that, new axles ($?). Maybe even a diff drop kit (~$35) though those are generally regarded as not needed.
