Can happen just as easily in a Tacoma.

Go park your truck with a hot exhaust on dry brush and watch the fire begin. The fire starts in the rear, and then moves forward (and under).

The guy was stupid to park a truck like that on brush. His fault.

There’s another thread about this, but that video has some great lessons to be learned, e.g., are you prepared to survive without access to your vehicle?

    True on that.

But it looks like he is on a dirt road before the cattle gate.

A coworker of mine started a fire that way too, and was even dumber for wondering why there was a fire there in the first place.

This is another reason why I did an exhast reroute on my Taco, that hot crossover pipe is stupid low and collects brush.

Didn’t watch the video but seeing the screen shot I’m a little curious to a couple things. Why isn’t he trying to put out the fire, no fire extinguishers or did it get too big? And why are you going to stop and make a video while this is happening and not trying to save what you can?

After reading this, I would like to ask a question for anyone with the knowledge.

What would be a good communication device to reach someone without cellular signal? My guess was a HAM radio, but without the training or license to use most aspects of it, i'm not sure if that would be a good option.

Im guessing he went through brush and some got caught between the skid and engine. Even though i have enough room to turn a semi around on my property, I have found tracks of dumbasses driving through my sagebrush to turn around.

Regardless of how the fire started, the link to expedition portal has a few useful tips in cases like this. I skimmed through the video and I’m almost glad it was this guy. He seemed to be prepared and worked for hours to isolate the fire. I feel like a lot of other people would have been illprepared and irresponsible by letting it burn. This guy did his best and now we have a couple lessons and tips for situations like this.

I’ve heard good things on inReach devices but all require a service like your cellphone plan.

I bet that guy is all fired up over his Jeep. I’d be hot under the collar too if that happened to me! It makes me smokin’ mad that he just sits there and does nothing. I’d be fuming! Smoke em’ if ya got em’ I guess....

    PLB’s - like the ACR PLB https://www.rei.com/product/843146/acr-electronics-resqlink-gps-personal-locator-beacon

I keep one of these in my go bag, which I take everywhere including my truck and while sea kayaking. They require no service plan but only to be used for dire emergencies. They only send out your location via satellite and a homing radio beacon signal too. Other types, like SPOT, send messages via satellite, but have a $10/month or so 1-year plan.

SPOTS are cool- I have one that I used for fieldwork and could report my position everyday wherever I was leaving my truck, and when I got back to it in non-emergency mode (I was doing spotted owl surveys in the forest at night, and often was working alone from one end of a canyon while my buddy was working the other), as well as using it to call for a air ambulance once at an offroad motorcycle accident.

You can also pay for SPOT now on an as needed basis month to month, which I plan on doing for long trips only.

CB and GMRS radio are good if you don’t want a license, but HAM is much better as you can access repeaters and even satellites with it and the license is easy to get- in fact, there are volunteer HAM groups that train and help you pass the test in one day!

Ham Radio is a good option, but....most people, run vehicle mounted radios. You would need to have a quick accessible unit that
could run independent of the vehicle.
