Owned both. Had an F150, then a Jeep, now a Taco. Comparing trucks, the F150 was great for family trips and extra leg room. The Taco isnt as roomy. Fuel economy is about the same for me depending on the driving. Cant really compare a full to a mid since both can serve different purposes. Choice goes to your needs vs wants lol. Either way, I think you'll be ok with a newer Taco and trading the F150. Hell my buddy just got the same Taco I have and traded his FX4. Got a great deal and a good amount on positive equity. Good luck on your choice, both a good picks.

    Beautiful truck.
I'm in the same situation as you to some degree.
I'm 6'4" and looking for a truck that looks great, but doesn't take up a large footprint, especially living in the Northern VA area.
Love the Tacoma's, and am seriously considering an ACLB, but...
Chevy offers a Reg Cab, Standard Bed (6'5").
The Chevy is only 205" vs the Tacoma AC at 212.3"
And the Chevy is only 4" wider.
    (I've got a 4Runner to haul people)
It's crazy how the Tacoma looks smaller, but in reality, it's not that much smaller.
I'm not saying the Chevy is better or that I'm buying one, I'm just throwing numbers out there for comparison.
The Tacoma looks great, even as is.
The Chevy will always be just a Chevy.
Tough call on your F150, it looks great but i know what you mean about the Tacoma, you can keep it dirty and not care, the F150 is different.

Another thought, keep the F150 and buy the Tacoma.

I drive 1-ton double cab 8' bed trucks at work regularly. Perfect for what we need, but I would be absolutely insane to own one as my DD. With the taco I can haul what I need to haul, tow what I need to tow and get the people I need to drive where they are going.

In my experience the majority of full size owners don't really need one, but people can make their own decisions on how to spend their money. It's all about your own situation.

Me personally, I enjoy getting into my truck after a week of driving a truck with the turning radius of a aircraft carrier and that gets 9mpg on a good day. I'm sure the 1/2 tons are far more tractable but the smaller interior and smaller power output aren't negatives to me.

I got tired of driving my full size too, still loved the hell out of the truck but for what I need now midsize is perfect. If you do it, get a crew cab trust me, especially since you have kids. The access cab doesn't have much space and even the crew cab will feel more nimble, easier to park, etc than your f150.

Not knocking full size trucks at all, if you have a need for it and need to tow more/need the space, keep it.

But if you are in the mood for switching to a tacoma, go for it. All depends on your needs

Just as an fyi, I was driving half way across the country regularly with my old full size gmc and I loved it, it was extremely comfortable, and I was towing a boat. So I do love the extra space of the full size trucks and what not.

I disagree. DC are not the be all end all truck cab configuration. For some very obvious reasons and not everybody cares about having extra interior room. These are trucks after all, meant for hauling and towing payloads.

If you’re concerned about towing and payload why would you buy a Tacoma?

I am the same way. I am typically the only passenger. But I got a DC. With 2 kids, it makes no sense getting an access cab.

I don't get why a Figure On Repairs Daily guy is hanging out in a Toyota forum? I might go try showing some LEG over in the RAM forum. Whatever floats your boat brother.

Figure on repairs daily? Lol. Honestly haven’t heard that one. I prefer “found on road dead”

I know you had that beautiful military grade Quicksand, giving you a hard time brother, shame you now roll in that gangsta truck. FIAT is my favorite Fix It Again Tony....

    First On Race Day

Anyhow, I went to the local Toyota dealership to test drive something before I drove 40 minutes to check out the actual one I'm interested in. It was a 2016 V6 4x4 Access Cab SR5. Obviously it wasn't as roomy as my F150, but it was perfectly acceptable, even for a fatty like myself. I'm not worried about cramming the kids in the back. They'll almost never ride back there and even if they do, they're small and can suck it up. The ride seemed to be ok, nothing to really say one way or the other. I just had it out for a few miles on local roads and a few miles on the highway because I didnt want to waste more of the salesman's time than I had to.

Now the bad. It was slow. I realize it's not fair to compare it to the EcoBoost in my F150, and it's not the slowest thing I've ever driven, but still, it was slow. Tomorrow when I drive the other one I'm going to ask to keep it for at least 45min or an hour so I can really get a feel for it.

Thanks for your suggestions so far.

I don’t like the body detailing on that truck, fords are also meh(i drive 2 at work)... i traded my 1500 ram eco diesel and glad i did. I also wanted to downsize, again- glad i did. The double cab is a must though IMO.

Get a double cab, because your kid won't stop growing for another 13 years.

I have both. Your F150 looks great! I have the same color but, it's a '13 with the 6 1/2' bed and canopy. I use it to tow a travel trailer. The F150 is a comfortable truck. My '18 DCSB 6sp man is okay, I got it because it's one of the few trucks with a manual.

I’m going to be in the minority here it seems. If you’re looking for a vehicle that fits your *needs*, then the taco’s a bettter fit. Based on your comments. Finances, wants, and wishes aside, Taco it is. But do the DCSB if you can. Same length, more function unless you truly need a long bed. If you want that extra bit of comfort, style, power, towing, then keep it. But deal with the size and cleaning obsession.

I had a tundra loaner once for a few days. One trip to the airport parking garage cured me of thinking of a full size. Unless I need 8K towing, I’m never going that route.

I love my Taco. If it’s dirty, then it just looks like it’s supposed to as an offroad. If it’s clean, then great.... nice clean Toyota.

I’m thinking you keep it clean because that’s what you like and you’d do the same with a Tacoma, so I really wouldn’t use that as logic for switching up. I also think you know what’s up with the comparison, there really isn’t one... two entirely different products. One is hybrid between a luxury sedan, sports car and a tow truck while the other is a utilitarian no frills dependable off road inclined vehicle which most agree is at least a bit underpowered.

Speaking of dirty, underpowered things

I don't think I even washed it 3 times in the 2.5 years I had it, and one of those was the morning I traded it in. The only option it had was air conditioning and the lame 4spd automatic. It had a whopping 202hp, and with the 35s it would only go 180 miles on a tank of gas. The Teraflex coils and shocks made it ride like a 1974 Mack dump truck. I think you could have measured it's 0-60 with a calender. And to top it off, there was a period of ~4 months when I had a 3hr daily commute in it
