IMO your replacement was also defective.

Agreed, but they dont seem to agree. Will find out either tomorrow or Monday what Toyota has to say.

Had my appointment today and sure enough, they heard the noise. Now the waiting game to hear back from the Service Manager or Toyota.

A good point I thought of the other night, and it may have been mentioned here.... If they cant fix the noise and they expect you to keep the truck, the seller is going to take a big hit on a private sale once the buyer hears that noise. They surely wont buy the line: "Toyota says it is fine."....

**EDIT** My appt was listed as "Noise when downshifting". This better not be a ploy to make it seem like a different issue.

Also, my paperwork was laying on the desk from the service writer and the diff replacement was $3307.10.

That does sound a little fishy by them putting that. I vaguely remember there being a TSB or some kind of service campaign of some sort that was for a suspected noise from the manual trans and they put a shield or something down there. I think it might be somewhere in this thread but good luck finding it, they were trying that as a solution before the TSB came out for the rear.

Can all these replacement differentials really be all new components? Or are they refurbing them? That would explain the re-occurrence.

Even if refurbished they should be meeting the designed specs.

Agreed, but there's just something about "refurbished" that I don't like. Of course I buy the cereal box behind the one in front that everyone has looked at. Drives my wife nuts.

No word from the dealer or from Toyota after my appointment. The Service Manager flat out told me that there is no fix for this and then kept referring to the transmission. Funny how it is the same noise as it was before, the case note list that the Toyota rep confirmed it was the diff and it was replaced. Now that the noise is back, all of a sudden the service manager can definitively say it is the transmission and not the rear-end even though he never even looked at it. I am not letting this go as it will affect the vehicles value.

If they are getting such large batches of bad diffs and the replacements are making noise too, I think it is time to start sending them out to a reputable gear shop for set-up and replacement.

Got my truck back today, they did TSB 0013-18 and 0186-17 and I no longer have a whine. Took the long way home from the dealer with no music playing and could not get it to whine or howl. I could basically do it on command before I dropped it off.

So i was busy yesterday at work and never had a chance to call the service manager or Toyota, but they never called me with an update. Just spoke with the SM and he said he feels it is in the tranny. Since another truck on the lot had the same noise he feels it is a trait of the truck and nothing is wrong. I havent been able to reach my rep at Toyota yet to see what they have to say.

If it's a trait of the truck they should advertise it on the website instead of just the opposite.

Agreed. And they tout that the interior is quiet as well via their advertising, but mine sounds like I have a door or window open most of the time. After having multiple Toyotas over the last 25 years, I think this may be the last depending how they handle this issue.

Spoke with my Toyota rep today. Since the service manager said it is a trait of the vehicle, Toyota cannot do anything. The only suggestion they had was to go to another dealer.

Great, another waste of my time trying to get Toyota to fix their shit because Clearwater Toyotas service department doesn't care about their customers.

Take it in two more times and then file a Lemon law claim and see what they say then....

I wont go back to that dealer as they have already proven they have no interest in making this right. Spoke with another dealer in my area and the service manager is doing a ride along tomorrow afternoon.

Understood. But, if you decide you want out of your truck, the other dealer, the one that won’t do anything, is actually more beneficial because each time they say no counts as a failed repair attempt. I’m not interested in Lemon lawing mine and like many others, just want the noise gone or tolerable. Mine is mostly better but I can still hear it.

Had a service manager at another dealer go for a ride. He didnt give the corporate spiel as the other dealer, but didnt feel like it was a huge deal. Said to try and test drive another Tacoma this weekend and give him a call next Wednesday. (he is out Mon and Tues)

This is my experience as well. I guess it's not just coasting. It's kind of coasting and accelerating at the same time.

For those of you thinking about moving into a 3rd gen... many 2018's have the issue. Proceed with caution.
