40k over 5 years at 7% return, minus say the 1.9% offered by Toyota comes out to over 13k... So I think you need a new pencil.

At the time I purchased, 4 percent was best I could find. I calculated on a 6 percent rate of return.

Also, whenever anyone argues it's best to pay interest always gives the perfect scenario where they have zero down. Real world, you have a down payment. And in the real world, your gains are not guaranteed at 7 percent. But the interest you pay is guaranteed.

You're right, returns are not guaranteed. And they are usually far more than 7%. Even if you bought a truck in '08 like I did, '10 and '11 more than cover the losses from '09. Easily.
Point being is it certainly not going to be hundreds of dollars difference like you orginally posted, it's going to be thousands. The only exception is an absolute worst case scenario that just isn't likely, and if it were to occur, clearly there would be bigger problems than your truck interest rate.

Regardless, this to me is more of a personal comfort level thing as opposed to a financial issue. People should have the real numbers though.

Your penciling must be off. The difference between 35k invested at 8% and a note at 2% is significant over 5 years.

No plastic chrome Tacoma badges on either of these trucks.

They both just look so "clean".

Really like the direction Toyota has taken with the SR.

@daddy_o - you thinking about taking the plunge?

My initial intentions was an Inferno Sport, but things in life happened and a new truck was not feasible. Now with Inferno discontinued I am looking at other options. I don't need the Navigation and all that other stuff and I wasnt fond of the OR because of the Chrome rear bumper. Now with this package on the SR, I tell you that Red one is looking really good. I am getting to the point now where I am ready to pull the trigger, so yea, it might happen now.

    Such a tease...

I like the Barcelona Red. It's a pretty rare color in my area as well, one of my favorites.

Except if you take the Toyota offered 2.9 percent in my area, you forgo the $1,000 cash back. And like I alluded to in an earlier post, it's fun to take a financial calculator and figure out the best possible scenario of savings, but in the real world, there's other factors. Like your trade in value dropping your interest paid. And most saver's don't put each and every dollar into a mutual fund or whatever you're gaining 8 percent on in your scenario. And if you do, your earnings are income, so if you collect, that's taxed. The reality is, for more real world situations, it's hundreds different rather than thousands or even $10k+ as suggested in a perfect ideal scenario.

2019 and Toyota is still offering up new vehicles with early 2000-era tech. :bored:

It's not a best case scenario, it's the historical norm.

    https://www.macrotrends.net/1319/dow-jones-100-year-historical-chart

The scenario is buying a truck for cash vs. financing and investing it. If you invested that cash and got the bare minimum average in returns over the last 90 years, its over 13k dollar difference. Annualized it's even more.

And yes, when you sell the stocks, you get hit with capitol gains tax, which is 15%. That's far less than your income tax so the money you earn from investing is taxed less than the money you make at work. You still come out ahead. By thousands.
