Not a 3rd Gen owner, but I went from an F150 (super cab, not the full crew cab) to my current 2nd Gen (2011 DC). The two trucks are apples and oranges and I fully researched and understood what I was giving up & gaining with making the switch. In the end (after many pro/con lists) the Tacoma suited my needs so much better. I don't regret the decision for a milisecond.

i'm looking to get out of my tacoma for a full size in the future...

all depends on your needs though. payload sucks in the tacoma. its a little tight inside too though i've made a couple 10 hour trips comfortably in it but would like more room...

personally i have no use for the access cab. way too small for me.. i'd grab a double cab. i also prefer the long bed. that little extra room comes in handy..

i'd say see if you can do an extended test drive with a tacoma and see if you can live with it... me, i'd keep the 150..

Everyone saying I should go up to the Double Cab, would you rather have a TRD Sport Double Cab or a TRD Off Road Access Cab? Assume the price and mileage is the same.

if you have children and you're used to the size of the f150 - absolutely get double cab. Access cab is not what you're looking for. AC is for single dudes building offroad rigs or weekend warrior rigs. DC will get it done for your family.

Depends on intended useage. Sport will handle better on the street. Off-road has a better ride but isnt as steady in turns like the sport.

My son has a 2017 sport DC short bed and I have a 2017 Off-road DC long bed. His sport is firm almost hash ride wise on the street but stays flat in turns. Mt off-road has a much softer ride on the street but kinda flops in turns.

If you off-road a lot then the off-road May be better. If it’s always on the street maybe the sport is better for you.

It’s all personal preference. I’d take a double cab either way. Price is or should be damn close to the same between a sport and off-road.

At all 3 dealerships in my area they offer the Sport and Off-road at basically identical prices. You should be able to talk them down to the price of the lower offering

Hey all. I’m kinda in the same boat as the original poster here. I’m still thinking of trading in my ‘15 dblcab lb sierra for a new sport dblcab lb. Only because I live in a condo now and own a cottage. Underground parking is tight with the Sierra and 95% of the time I am by myself, do not tow anything other than a 12’ utility trailer or my 2 sleds. It’s just my wife and I. I’ve test driven the taco a few times but still undecided. I would like to bring the taco out to the lake for the weekend but the dealer won’t allow that long of a test drive.

    Keep the 150.

You will rue the day you ever got a Tacoma when you have two kids that are 5 and 6.

A double cab Tacoma does not have sufficient space for a family. It's small and cramped. Your kids will destroy the backs of your front seats getting in and out, and your wife will likely complain about having to sit too close to the dash when there is a kid sitting behind her.

All of the 3rd Gen Tacoma model years have had substantial problems. The new generation Tacoma has actually significantly dropped the Tacoma reliability ratings. So if you want a Tacoma I highly recommend avoiding the 3rd Gens. Stick with the reliable and tried and true 2nd Gen.

I have a double cab long bed Tacoma. Kids are planned within the next 5 years. When that happens I will #1 be buying a mini van. Because I think mini vans are awesome. I'm getting a white Honda Odyssey with black wheels, tinted windows, upgraded audio system, and a Thule roof rack. It's gonna be bad ass. Then #2 I'm going back to a full size Ford truck. The Tacoma will be a fun hunting rig and toy that will be kept off to the side at that point.

The Tacoma is way too small for a family vehicle, especially when you have kids that are older already. And it's really not a safe family vehicle in my opinion. When my 6 foot husband is going to have to cram himself into the dash to fit kids behind the seat all I can image is a bad accident breaking his femurs.
Plus there is zero room for anything other than people which is a grave inconvenience.

You have a nice F150. I would keep it. The only time I would get the Tacoma is if it's very rarely ever going to carry your family and I would by a 2nd Gen.

Also... if you use the payload in the 150 at all. The first day you have to use the Tacoma to haul, you'll regret the switch.

The Tacoma DCLB really is not that much smaller than the Sierra so it's not really going to change your parking situation.

I got a new job downtown where I park in a structure. I really don't like it. Not because I have to drive the truck in tight spaces... but because other people don't know how to park and it makes my life hell and I get door dings. I have a DCLB.

Take the Tacoma out for a test drive without a sales person and drive it to your condom parking to test it out.

I previously drove a 2016 F-150 SCSB and loved it. Transferred to a new job in the middle of downtown Portland and originally thought I'd be stuck there for two years before being allowed to work from home. I don't use the mass transit system so I traded it for a VW Passat thinking I'd drive that for two years and then get another truck. Turns out I only had to wait one year before working from home so truck shopping I went. The two trucks I had in mind were the new F-150s and Tacomas. Since Ford at the time wasn't dealing too much, I went with the Tacoma because of the great price. I have no regrets at all since comparing a Tacoma to the Ford is like comparing apples to watermelons.

If you want speed, keep the Eco-boost. If you want versatile off-roading capability, get a Tacoma OffRoad.

You don’t know what your talking about. I have a 4 and 5 year old and no issues with size for us. I don’t even adjust my seat and I’m 6’ tall. Sure a full size would have more room, but my kids, wife and I are comfortable in the truck together. We can load up gear, bikes etc and go for trips.

I really don’t understand the mentality of wanting huge oversized vehicles. Payload and towing are different, but the need for tons of unused space inside. I mean my kids are strapped into car seats, having 3” of space or 3’ around them doesn’t matter. They can barely move around once strapped in.

Just because it seems like a couple people missed that little tidbit in my rambling OP :)

That's kinda what I'm going for. We have a 3-row Traverse to haul the kids around in, I don't actually need the extra room for just myself.

That's correct, especially if they go with an access cab.

Is this F150 paid off? Is so, keep the Ford. A paid off vehicle is the best vehicle.
