    I've been wanting to start a thread on drum brakes because there are soo many people that think it's hard or black magic.
    No special tools, though available, are needed. A couple screwdrivers, needle nose vice grips, channel locks, hook, etc will do the job.

    *Based on these FSM screenshots it looks as though 2nd and 3rd gen drum brakes are the same. All the pictures I post will be from 2nd gen tacomas.

    Replacing everything worn, broken, and rusted.
    Did this a few weeks ago, wasnt fun. But definitely a learning experience. Has the truck always been in Boone? We dont get that kind of corrosion in Charlotte.     True, you dont have to have special tools, but a drum spring tool definitely makes life better and saves at least an hour of time.

    Good pics and info. I replaced mine a few years ago but lately have been having some issues. Gonna probably replace them and see what happens.

    I have them tight enough that it’s hard to remove or install a drum, but the ebrake won’t keep the truck from moving. Brakes have been horrible lately.

    Check that this bracket is in the right place. My passenger side one keeps moving. I just ordered new hardware kits and Parking brake lines.

    This is it for now.. Not pretty but will be good until I feel like taking the carpet out.



    Replaced the Parking brake cables on both sides and reaction plate on passenger side.

    Off subject a little
    In this pic, your bracket for the e brake looks to be in a different position than mine,is this to help with the stretching a lift can cause? It looks like it sitting above the leaves.E3D7EE05-7FA5-427F-B46D-8328DD545C6C.jpgIm doing my drums today
    Our local guys says I have some cable stretching from my lift.

    Wasn’t to bad,even though Rock auto sent the wrong brake shoes with the power stop kit,:annoyed: had to go the advanced, and pick up a set.

    Do you have to back off the adjuster star before removing the drums? I really just want to check my pad life as this will be the first time I change the fronts in 65k miles I've owned the truck.

    Should be able to just take the drum off, check and slip it back on. Don't push the brake pedal while the drum is off.... it doesn't go well. Ask me how I know;)

    Yeah, thats a good way to pop brake cylinders. Did that in my dakota (previous truck). That truck I had to back the star wheel out or the lip on the drum would clean your springs off as you pried it off.
