Just doing my annual check in here to see if Yota had done anything to improve the turd gen powertrains. I see not. Damn. I wish all you guys would stop buying these things so Yota would get the message and fix it... then I can buy another one. Until then I'll keep my 2nd gen since it has low miles and new Pioneer head unit. Still need to get the frame checked out and perhaps replaced, which will keep me good to go for a while.

Also I am surprised no one seems to have dropped a supercharger kit for the 3rd gens. That might make them palatable. I see a twin turbo is in the works. Turbos with all that exhaust plumbing, uggghhh... I'd prefer a SC. Magnusson might have one coming out?? But not yet apparently.

I'd consider a Tundra except for the mpg. Last I checked it was rated 13 city 17 highway. Oof. That would be OK maybe for occasional use but not as a DD, at least for me. Ford, GM and Ram full size trucks are rated significantly higher but it's hard to tell if that is legitimate or if those guys just have design features that cater to the EPA mpg tests. And none of them would compare to Yota reliability.

Keep the dream alive, since Toyota has only been able to unload around 500,000 of these underpowered trucks since the rollout....

    Just kidding, enjoy your truck.

I hear the all electric 2022 Tacoma is going to really be a badass ride....

Yeah, I know. They are everywhere. Beautiful trucks, that just won't go. They are like the gorgeous supermodel you can't wait to take home only to find she is terrible in bed.

Toyota built these trucks with fuel economy in mind. How can you expect it to be a world beater and still average 22-23MPG? This truck does what it's designed to do and that's low end torque to play with. If I had wanted a speed demon I would have bought a Corvette...bad news is the Corvette is piss poor offroad where the Tacoma, on the other hand, does its' best work.

That's where I disagree. The 3rd gens have very little low end torque compared to 2nd gen 4.0L.... and a very busy auto transmission, at least the ones I test drove. All for a trivial increase in MPG. And I do have a 2016 M7 Corvette. That is a whole other ball game. :)

Test drove...did you try 4 high/ 4 low out on the trails? All I can say is I've been completely surprised so far.

This thread is odd... after coming from a 600+ RWHP car to the Taco, I in no way feel it is “under powered”.

Lmaooooo. Thanks for the laugh, buddy! Enjoy that sweet pioneer HU and dont forget your Tetanus shot!

Yes and no. 2nd gen has good low end torque but runs out of power at higher revs. And the transmission is rock solid at holding high gear even on hills up to a pretty good point. 3rd gen that I drove is just the opposite. No low end torque but decent power high in the rev band. And a frenetic indecisive transmission that downshifted 2 gears in conditions where mine wouldn't even have been close to downshifting 1.

Travelinman301 is partially correct.... The 3rd gen was not originally designed with MPG in mind. The ECU was reprogramed for better fuel economy just prior to mass production. This is why the vehicle feels anemic. The power/torque is there, just restrained by the ECU. Toyota knows that the last minute change was a mistake, but we will all have to wait till the next major model change.

Raylo.... The busy auto transmission is a learning ECU and calms itself after a few thousand miles.

I am not saying the truck is perfect, but it does what it was designed to do.

    My 2 cents.

If that's the case perhaps an aftermarket tune would help if the tuners have learnt how to access the ECU. But that would kill the powertrain warranty. Lots of that going on in the Corvette world, especially with superchargers.

There are tunes out there for those in need and don't mind the loss of their warranty. To each their own.

I also just saw the mid-engine Corvette spy photos. It is going to be interesting to say the least.

I came from a HEMI to the Taco. There was no doubt even on the test drive there was a big loss of power and room. I was also getting the HEMI Tick which I didn’t want to deal with.

In my opinion the Taco is fine. I don’t seem to have all the transmission issues so many speak of. I do mostly highway miles and can pretty much keep it at 80mph if I want to. Going up hills it loses some steam and also I can also watch the fuel tank go down. Sluggishness off the line is kinda annoying, but not a reason to regret my purchase.

Someone in an earlier post mentioned premium gas. I put mid grade in (89) and it seemed to run smoother and I got slightly better mpg, but nothing to write home about. I’m going to run 3 tanks of mid grade and then switch back to 87 to see if there is an actual difference.
