I climbed under the truck today and found this on the transfer skid.



This isn’t the first broken weld I’ve found on my aluminum skids.
This one happened while I was installing the front one
The front was replaced by the company without issue.

There aren’t any dents or impact points on the transfer skid. Just a few scrapes. And the weld should be way stronger than the material around it anyway. I’m going not going to name the company until I can talk to them. I’m really happy with the way the aluminum has held up so far. It just shows why welding aluminum isn’t for everyone.

@coke can I bought this 3d printed 1:72 scale life raft from shapeways also. It came like this minus the paint. It was a semi clear material

I’m really happy with the way the 1/4” aluminum is holding up (short of the shitty welds) and I’m really trying to avoid weight and 700lb coil springs.

 

The way my steel skids look I could not imagine how messed up aluminum would be.

 

Maybe I could give you a few pointers

 

Nice to finally meet you @Jerneyman. Went this his house today to get the measurements for my skid. Damn good dude and definitely knows what hes doing with these skids. Cant wait to see the final product and get it installed and tested out. Gotta admit, we have a pretty good HSV crew here.

 

Same thoughts I had the first time. I guess we will keep him.

 

Also, I think I'm going to like my fog light upgrade. Amazon messed up my order so my other one won't be here til monday but the output of these compared to my pod fogs are incomparable. Here's a few mock up teaser pics I took. Note, both lights are installed the same way but the throw of the new yellow ones are just incredible.

 

With most metals the welds are as strong or stronger than the metal but with aluminum the welds are the weak points.

 

I don't know about that, you did decide to buy aluminum skids.

I have aluminum front and mid from Relentless. He used to mention a lot that he could not find qualified workers to weld the aluminum to the standards he wanted. Mine have had no issues so far.

 

Haha dont feel honored. I really like everybody, until you give me a reason not to. You and your wife were very hospitable and just welcoming. Really appreciated that and just enjoyed having the feeling that we had been friends a long time and not recent strangers Haha!
