Yep, and I cringe when I see people crank up and blast off as soon their engine fires cold.

Back in my day oil changes were done every 3,000miles... then bumped up to 5,000miles and that was deemed LONG. I was first skeptical of 10,000miles. Mostly because I was afraid of losing oil, or how contaminated it got. I checked my oil level the other day 7,000miles on this oil and it's still at the full mark, no oil burn and the color is still dark golden.. (not that color is a good indicator... i mean obviously light color = newish and black = older).. I'll continue to do my 10k oil changes but will keep an eye on the gauge to watch for oil consumption, would hate to lose a motor due to low oil.

I did my first oil change at 4K and I just did my 2nd one at 7,800 and the oil was black as crap. I don’t get how people can wait til 10k as per Toyota care

Color is not an indication of the condition of the oil.

    Read: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/forum_summary

Also....review the many Blackstone lab sample checks. Many of those samples indicate that the oil could actually go well past 10k. On modern synthetics, Toyota is probably being quite conservative recommending a 10k OCI

Did your vehicle come with a little booklet in your glove compartment?

Every oil change interval thread starts with not reading the owners manual which includes the exact information required to answer the question. By reading it you might even find you could be using your vehicle in severe service which has a different oil change interval.

My truck falls under severe service for the following reasons:
    Towing
Short distance driving to work (7km)
    Winter

Now most days I drive alone and without a trailer. Not all days are severely cold winter days. Sometimes I drive longer distances. I haven’t decided if I will keep this truck forever or trade in a few years. Either way my service records will be impeccable and whenever I do sell there will be no questions if the truck was abused or taken care of. Do I want to buy the used truck with the minimum oil changes or the one that always erred on the side of caution and changed at 8000km (5000mi)?

Do a filter change and top off with clean oil, it is a common practice

Just drain the filter cap , then unscrew the filter cap and change the filter, then reinstall the filter cap with new filter inside.

You are wasting a perfectly good filter! Just change the oil every 5K!

Depends on the size of the filter and how much comes out during removal, probably about a quart.

I'll stick with what Toyota recommends.

** Ironically, I only put on about 10k a year, so I'll just do it once a year...

Thats why i got their 7 year 200,000 km platinum service plan. They drive the bus on service for the first 2-3 years services and after that i follow their schedule to a 'T" .. if anything goes wrong they are the ones that set the standard i follow. Doing more changes isnt going to hurt anything at all but our vehicles arent using the old oil types either any more . the New full synthetic oils are way more capable and last a lot longer then the old oils we used to use.

I drive about 15 miles of dirt road daily. I'll be at 5k in 2 months or so and I plan on having them change the oil on that first visit. If they can give me a sample, I'll send it to Blackstone and get a baseline on whether I'm being over cautious.

Any name brand is fine. You ever heard of a modern engine failing because of oil brand?
Engines fail because of A) wrong viscosity or B) not enough oil or C) never changing oil or filter. Never brand of oil. Don't fall for marketing hype.
