Do it. I make up reasons every day to drive my 3rd gen MT. Definitely not just another 'manual truck' like others I've owned. The engine likes revs and when its in the money zone its smooth as butter and always has plenty of go. This truck has so much driver feel and the power band works great with the 4.30 gears.

Mind if I ask what mods you have? I just got an 18 trd OR SB MT but I’m kinda disappointed in the sportiness. Seems like there’s no low end at all. I’m coming from a 13 Wrx stage 2 and that car was way more fun... but I’ll try anything to to get this truck feeling better! OV tune? Pedal commander? Thanks!

Toyota neuters the low end a little bit. My MT setup was: OVTune, URD Spec-U exhaust, ported throttle body, AFE intake. I really liked driving that truck (excluding moving a trailer in reverse). OVTurbo if you want to spend the money when it is available to be purchased. 4.88 gears if you’re running larger than stock tires.

With the AT I didn’t like the intake and exhaust noise as much.

I bought my manual without even knowing how to drive it. My father had to come up just to get it home. I bought a truck I couldn't even drive. That's how much I wanted a manual transmission. Do it.

Does no one with a auto use the S mode and shift yourself? I love my Auto cuz I get lazy drinking coffee and taking my kids to school. Plus traffic in the Bay area is a breeze in the auto. Mine is a Pavement Princesses for the most part, offroad only to get on and off the river bed. Driving is S mode is great.

“S” mode (gear limiter) is not even close to a MT.

Get in your truck. Start moving. Hold the throttle to the floor. Try shifting at anything but redline. The computer will shift for you at redline no matter when you say that it’s “ok”

    It’s just a gear limiter.

Plus the gear spacing between 4-5-6 is not well thought out.

Had the truck for 2 weeks now and never used it well once lol I used ECT power button when cruzing up hills but I seem to be getting 20mpg when cruzing mixed driving. but my Hwy MPG was 23. I'm coming from an 04 taco auto and this truck is a Huge improvement.

This is about the opposite of my opinion. I loved my 17 six speed but I would never ever say the engine liked revs and was smooth as butter. Sure it was better than the 1970 something Ford F100 I used to drive as a kid while mowing grass but compared to even a Honda Civic 5 speed, it’s a dump truck. If you have ZERO experience with any other manual transmission, maybe you’ll feel it drives nice, otherwise I’ll call it what it is. Still an unrefined/built for off-road truck.

Well put. I’m not sure why almost every new vehicle contains the “manual” shift feature.

If I lived in a major city, I’d have kept my auto. Traffic there is no joke.

But let’s be clear— S Mode is nothing like a manual.

Im in the minority here but I love my Auto transmission. After 20 plus years driving MT, I knew my next vehicle would be auto(unless it was a sports car). I went to the dealer and asked for an auto in 2010 and did the same for a 3rd gen in 2017. Im happy with my purchase and my Tacoma is not as bad as it gets painted in these forums. It makes me chuckle when I read some of the comments about how bad the AT is. It suits my needs and call me lazy but I love driving auto in traffic and having my hands free.
Edit: Forgot to add. But if you are not happy with your truck you should switch to the MT. At least you will be paying for what you want and be content.

At least you can restrict an upshift or force a downshift. It’s still better than having no control at all.

I love my manual, but it drives like a manual truck, not like a sports car, or even a Civic. Test drive. Then test drive again. Make sure it's for you before you commit to losing money on a trade in.

I can now clearly say after my drive to dinner I tried the s mode and Indeed it's just caps the gears. Better off just pressing the ECT button and stomp it, it goes.

I agree 100% this truck has balls when you punch it. And When I get Lit up at a xmas party anyone with be able to drive me home!
But jokes aside I love the Auto. I live in a Rural County in CA and it take me at least and hour and half drive in any direction to get to Civilization or a stop light. So bulk shopping and out of town days in the bay make the Auto fit my needs.:quickdraw:

Curious if you can put a Manual into the automatics. What would it take to convert it.

When my 04 trans went out I looked into doing a manual swap, It was a ton of work. A buddy of my did it and he's 4x4 didn't work, check engine light was always on and some other things. He ended up make the 4x4 work but the light stayed lit.

Figured it'd be a hassle. :( . Really regretting not getting the Manual. In my 20 years of driving, this is the first Auto I've ever owned. Where I travel for work, decided that an auto might be easier in the heavy traffic I get into randomly around New England. But... I passionately hate the Automatic, having non stop issues. I want my MT back. Guess I'll be trading in soon.

Outside of the physical pedals and shifter etc or what I like to call the easy stuff... You have to do ecu, programs, probably wiring harness, trans mounts. I dont believe it can even be flashed it may be a whole new computer. Im not a toyota mechanic though.
