Hey guys, I just got new struts and coils installed on my, and was wondering what the process would be like to replace the strut mount? Would I need a coil spring compressor and everything or just some basic tools?
The parts I want to replace on the diagram are:
    48680A
    48510B
    48510J
    48603A
    48603 (RH)
    48609 (LH)

You have to take the strut assembly back off the truck and put it in a spring compressor to get that top plate off. What's wrong with that stuff? is the rubber worn through?

That's probably not the source of the clunk. There's not really any room/slack for the spring to move around in there.. even when the suspension is at full drop. Did you check the LCA bolt torque? It should be 100 lb/ft.. the alignment shop left mine loose and they made a popping sound

Also pic of mine when I was putting my latest coils and struts in, no compressor. Just follow the steps in the video. To each his own, but it's really easy with no compressor.

You have to get it aligned anyway, compressor or not.

    Edit... OOPS,

That's pic of dropping the Rancho out with no compressor. But you get the idea.

Just a side note, on install, with 800lb+ springs the weight of the truck wasn't quite enough to get the coil to compress enough to start the top nut on the strut. Had to have a friend who weighs about 250lbs stand on the side bar to get it to compress a little more.

    Haha! See man.. sketchy..:anonymous::)

You got your buddy jumping up and down on the sidebar while your fangers are all up in there!

If you nick the threads on the shock shaft then you're futzing around trying to get the nut started with a unsecure spring in your face! No thanks.. just my 2 cents

800# springs? Lol. I bet the ride quality is absolute garbage without 300 pounds of armor up front.

The highest available for the Tacoma are 700# that I am aware of and the weight of the truck works just fine.

    Lol, I get ya!

But it's the opposite of what your thinking. When the spring rate is that high, when you start to Jack up on the lower ball, the weight of the truck isn't quite enough for the spring to compress fully, so the truck starts to lift off of the Jack stands. That's a bad thing!!!

The extra weight keeps the truck from lifting off of the Jack stands while you center and start the top but. As long as the truck is securely on the Jack stands your OK.

As far as replacing the top mount, (I think OP means top hat) after spring is unloaded, unbolt the 3 bolts, replace hat and pad. Reassemble.

Soooo final verdict is I should probably go find a shop with a compressor I can use before doing this?

I guess the obvious question is why do you think you need to replace it? What exact issues are you having?

It’s just rusty/cracked/worn, it’s not urgent to fix it. I was just going to do it tomorrow on my day off and because my local parts store had the parts in stock for a decent price I posted on here how I would go about doing it. If I’m going to have to use a compressor then I just won’t do it until I can have access to one.

If you have no issues, I'd leave as is man. If your like me and do over kill on maintenance, yes you can do it yourself.

    Need...

    Jack Stands
    Floor Jack
Another Jack, bottle jack or OEM tire jack.
Ratchet set. Set of ratcheting wrenches (pic)

    A couple hours time :)

But the most important thing, you need to get an alignment done. Anytime you do work on the front suspension, change coils, struts, tires, you need an alignment.

If your going to go ahead and swap the parts, do so and get it aligned after. If you leave as is, get it aligned.

    Sorry for the confusion bro!

All g man, I’m like you... I do overkill just because I care about my baby. I’ve got these nice beautiful looking new shocks and coils, then if I look up a few inches I see these cracked and crusty rubber bushings and shock mounts and it just makes me cringe... should’ve been smarter and had them done all at once. Wisdom really is power

    I gotcha :)

To do the job yourself... Min tools... If you had to buy it all $200. I think that's what you were looking for. If you have the tools... Free.

But this is what you need...

To do it quickly add Impact and sockets... If you bought it all new to do the job about $300.

BUT, my motto is every time you buy a tool, you save money on the next time.

(these are pics of my own tools, what I used)
