My chimichanga was mirrored and couldn’t get it to flip correctly without the proper orientation of how the camera was mounted, which shows less of the street than I like. I haven’t heard that the Yimu doesn’t work, just that there’s lots of button pushes to get the screen oriented the correct way.

Little confused here. Can you not just buy a front camera setup, or do you need to buy the backup setup first???

 

If you want the front camera you need the rear camera set up override.

The way it works is that the back camera set up turns on the camera screen when not in reverse.

The front camera set up is a relay that switches between the front camera and the rear camera.

Anybody install the backup one and have issues? Mine seems to only turn on like 75% of the time and sometimes regardless of where the switch is when I go into reverse the camera won’t switch on. My best guess is an intermittent short or something... or maybe I’m connecting to the wrong prongs out of the 7 on the back of the switch...

 

My guess is perhaps the harness plug isn’t snapped all the way into the radio. It’s a tight fit and really needs to be shoved in. The other option is a relay issue, like an intermittent ground.

 

Did you leave the red wire from power cable unconnected? But you still have to ground correct?

 

Question on DPDT switch. It’s it momentary on and off, meaning you have to hold it up or down to view camera and returns to center/ off position when you release?

I suppose you could find and use one that is momentary if that is what you would like, but I went with the DPDT ON-OFF-ON style. Usually the momentary type are used for stuff like door locks or windows. It's nice to flick this switch when parking or backing and using the camera without having to hold it down. That way you can have both hands free to steer and gear shift as needed. Once your done flick it to the off position.

 

Thanks and I agree. I just got my switch from Amazon that looks like yours, but returns to center out if the box. Haven’t powered it yet but getting ready to do my install and trying to verify it’s like yours and will stay on either camera.

If it's like mine, it should not return to center. It should have a positive click and stay either up - middle or down.

I want to thank OP @Papadave418 - Tonight I finally finished this job! I had started it about a week ago. I bought the kit, an AOB switch and was going to buy the Chimichanga camera you used, but hesitated cause you mounted it with the wires going up at first and I needed one that mounted with the wires going back. I f-ed up and bought a camera I thought would work - but failed to notice it was a rear view camera ONLY, so it worked but I was stuck with a reverse image

Well I kept checking on this thread hoping someone would post about a camera that worked with the wires facing back - like I needed it to work. Thankfully @Papadave418 came through with a post about the Chimichanga camera being able to give a front view when cutting the green wire and mounting it with the wires to the rear - just like I needed it to

So the Chimichanga camera came in today and wouldn't you know it - it had the connector like the one I was replacing! So all I needed to do was unplug the old one and plug in the Chimichanga (with the green wire cut) and it worked correctly

I ran my wire (RCA with the red pigtail) into the cab through one of the available nipples on the passenger side of the firewall. Easy/clean and water tight (after heat shrinking some marine tubing onto the nipple and wire). The rest of the job I did like we all described in this thread.

I forgot to mention, but I mounted my switch in the place of the blank at the lower left of the steering wheel. I had to use a dremel to flatten the rear of the switch hole area - but just the back, I did nothing to the front part. This was to allow the switch to fully seat into the hole. You'll see what I mean if you go this route and remove the blank - there are some bump stops at the back of the hole - these are what I dremeled out - no biggie. I also filed the top of the switch down flat - it clears the switch bay better and doesn't harm the switch itself. I installed the switch and hit the back side with a squirt of hot glue so it would stay put, not that is was at all loose or anything more of reassurance than anything. Then wired it all up the same as OP described in a previous post.

Here are some pictures of the install.

Made a bracket of sorts from a small piece of metal. The bracket is U shaped and grabs into the back sides of the grill grate. Camera is held in place solid. It ended up being about two inches from the center line (center grid hole is too big to easily fit the camera) but I can live with that.


Here the switch is selecting the rear camera to show the filing job I did on the top - very little filed off and you can't see that white part when your seated.



The front cam is mainly for parking - I am never sure how much room I have in front of me. You can see the license plate bracket at the bottom of the frame. I left the grid lines (didn't cut the white wire on the camera loom) cause they do serve to let me know about how much distance I have. I put a tape measure on the floor and found the red, yellow and green are at about the 1ft, 2ft, and 3ft distance from the front of the bumper.

 

Anyone place the switch in center console below climate control?

 

Ok. So somehow I didn’t order the camera. Sat down this morning and ordered a bunch of random Amazon $hit. Pool equipment, Bluetooth aux adapter, soft close drawer slides, and yes... two cameras because I couldn’t decide. I’ll return one of them. Cameras arriving tomorrow on 1-day delivery. We’ll see if I have any time to install.

 

I mounted mine in that position and cut the green wire. The image is still upside down. Not sure if i need to do something different or get a different camera. Help please

 

I had ussues in one of my crimps from the rear override harness. Check where you split the wire and the ends
