My vote would be for a HK USP9 SD with B&T suppressor :)

    In a .45 I would definitely say the 1911

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
What are you going to use it for?
Nobody asked that question...just spouted their favorite....

If it's for sport, I like 1911...a lot.
I don't take 1911's in the dirt hiking...I have other sidearms for that.
I don't take my 1911's out concealed-carry....I have other sidearms for that.
I do like to tinker and upgrade....can't beat a 1911 for that.
If it's for a truck gun or home protection, both are very good.
Beretta gives you more capacity and some people (most?) shoot 9mm better....and don't let anyone tell you a 9mm bullet won't influence a fight.
    Buy what feels best.
For me, a single-stack 1911 grip and geometry just feels right.
Never really liked double-stacks but I wouldn't hesitate to take one into a fight, either.
Resale is likely to be better on the 1911.
BTW, I talked a friend into buying a 1911, he chose a Springfield.
I was so rough and crude coming out of the box, he had to send it back to Springfield.
Now it's better but still not right.
    I was really surprised.

Great Question, acually I will use it for the range and as a side arm for when I go hunting.

I have a Smith & Wesson 1911 (SW1911PD) in .45 ACP w/ the 4" barrell and absolutely love it. I love the feel, the single action trigger pull as opposed to a double action pull, and how accurate it is. If I had a choice, I'd bring a .45 ACP to a fight over a 9mm any day of the week. Match the .45 diameter with a good HP round and you just can't beat the stopping power. Yes, you get more rounds with a Beretta, but honestly, if you think you'll shoot more than 8 rounds and won't have time to reload (moment of truth), then you need to spend some more time at the range and read LTC Dave Grossman's book "On Killing", and perhaps "On Combat" as well. Besides, you should be carrying a full load anyways. So if you suddenly find yourself in a gang war "find some cover, then return fire!".

My father has a Kimber 1911 CDP II and we both love it also. It is just a great design - the genius of John Browning should tell you something about this model .

If you want to carry it concealed (I have/do), I would recommend a shoulder holster or outside-the-waistband hip holster. I've carried it in an IWB holster and it was really uncomfortable - although I didn't carry it in a crossbreed holster. I just bought a crossbreed holster for a Kahr .40 I just bought to serve as my IWB carry weapon for those warm days. This setup should be much more comfortable without sacrificing too much knock-down power.

Let us all know what you decide to do and what you think of your purchase. Good luck and happy shooting!

After reading Hunters post, I had an epiphany...

If you want a good handgun without the higher-price of large caliber ammo, get yourself a good/used Browning HP if you want a 9mm...

Rock-solid, and doesn't cost as much as .45ACP ammo...

    ;)

Anyone that says the 1911 is easier to clean ob iously does not know firearms. The Beretta is the easiest semi auto in the world to take down a.d clean. I have both and 9mm ammo is way cheaper and so is the price. Put the diff in ammo and have fun.

the beretta will work right outta the box, and keep working.
The 1911 will need to be smithed by a good gunsmith and then dialed in to perform at the level of the Beretta. the 1911 is single action, and must be carried cocked and locked.
The Beretta is Double action/single action and can be carried with a round chambered and the hammer lowered.

I would go Beretta. I do own a Kimber Hi-cap 1911 as well as a Beretta.

I hear ya, story of my life. :( I carried a 1911 in the army, they were the most reliable weapons in our company. I should qualifiy that by say it was right before the m9 was fully deployed. (Showing my age) Ice, mud, sand nothing stopped it. Too bad I was such a bad shot with it!

    Haha...not doing it...can't make me!
I used the 92fs for a couple years in the Coast Guard. I never had my own personal to shoot, just checked them out of the armory. I feel they were not the best gun but I was shooting a "high mileage" weapon, most of them in the armory were defiantly broken in. I have the 1911 TLE and is great to shoot. The biggest flaw in my eyes was the trigger on the 92fs, little heavy and kind of loose fitting.

No Mudflaps, Fog lights on all the time, Map light/Dome light mod, Door sill protectors, In-channel window guards, Re-badged and sock-monkeyed,many more to come.
M9's action is so damned smooth. After leaving service 5 years ago, I can appreciate that now.
A 1911, though, is on my wanted list. Both will serve for range and hunting.
Ask yourself if you would rather try to take down a wild cat or some other medium to large animal with a 9 or a 45?

Years ago, I had a very loose 1911 in the military, and that thing never let me down ... even when it got wet & muddy.

1911 in 45 ACP... The Beretta's a nice weapon but for one shot incapacitation the 45 ACP has it all over the 9mm (others will debate this but 100 years of ballistics are pretty indisputable). High capacity is sometimes an advantage and the 9 is more controllable for many shooters but if my life is a stake... 45 ACP... But more important is to get what is comfortable to carry and shoot... A 9mm in your pocket is better than a 45 left in the glove box... And bullet placement is even more important than size or capacity. It doesn’t matter how big the cross section is or how many are in the double stack mag if you can’t hit what you’re aiming at.

I'd go for the 1911. Its an amazing weapon. I've also heard some pretty good things about the XD. IMO stay away from the 92fs...yeah they are issued to some police and MP but thats only because of budget.
