What made you choose the gearing that you chose, and would you have wanted to try something else?

Just talking with some people. The other option would be 4.88 ?

I'm not to sure, but I thought I saw a video where someone put 5.92? Not for highway use I'm assuming.

You can do whatever gears you want. But what size tires are you going to do? Some questions you need to ask. Also, im not an expert, but I think the higher gears, the weaker they are?

@HolyHandGrenade and @stairgod know more technical stuff than I do

I think I saw the same video. It was 5.29s in a white turd gen on 35s out west somewhere.

The guy doing the install said the crappy third gen engine makes power at higher RPMs (Great planning for a truck motor, I know...) Said the first time they did 4.88s in a third gen on 35s he came back and said “it needs 5.29s”.

I always hear that the higher, numerically, the gear ratio, the weaker the gears. However, @Rockbaron1 (Pat) made a good argument against this at Takeover. That guy knows his shit. I don’t recall exactly what his argument was, but I do remember thinking “that makes sense. This guy knows his shit”.

Im sure @stairgod wll have insight. That guy also knows his shit

I will also add that I just went from 4.56s to 4.88s in my second Gen automatic on 35s. The difference is noticeable. I’m glad I did not go 5.29s. 4.88s seem perfect.

I did it immediately after Dave. This happened at Takeover. I figured “OK, now is the time”

I was just saying that if you look at a 4.10 gear vs 5.29 the 5.29 ring gear is way thicker and since it has one tooth less then the 4.10 the teeth are thicker as well. The thicker gear is going to help reduce deflection. It's true that pinion head is smaller on the 5.29 gear but the shaft is the same diameter. The thing is its usually the ring gear that strips, at least thats always been the case for me, so it doesn't really matter that the pinion is smaller cause its stills stronger then the ring gear.

Heres some cool pics an measurements of a 4.10 ring and pinion vs a 5.71

However the load is spread across less teeth, meaning each tooth sees more load individually. One of the reasons Rockwell's had a reduction on the pinion, and portals have it in the portal boxes. Allows overall gearing to be lower without sacrificing the strength of the R&P. Iirc, the pinion is really the issue, not so much the ring gear. In my personal experience, when a pinion tooth snaps, it ends up wiping out a few teeth on the ring gear with it.
One time I let my buddy drive my CJ he managed to destroy the spider gears, but the R&P were fine. Can't recall if that was the original rear with the two piece axles or the 44 I swapped in.

I don’t know. I was driving home Monday night after work. I had the radio off and heard crunchiness.

I went home, pulled the drain plug, found shards on the magnet, and called ECGS.

When I pulled the rear, I found the above.

You forgot to mention the grinding sound from the driveshaft loop. :)

I forgot to mention the extra torque multiplication caused by the lower gears. That has a huge effect on the stress the R& P see.
I remember an analogy between the R&P and axle shafts, i.e. how a 35 spline axle shaft is stronger than a 31 spline. Upon reflection, that analogy is misleading at best. On an axle shaft all the splines divide the load evenly. On a R&P, essentially one pinion tooth is driving against one ring tooth. More than one tooth is meshing at a time, but only one is seated fully to transfer torque. This requires more research.

    Thanks Pat. @Rockbaron1

That's when I wasn’t going to Wheel the truck anymore.

Skids are back in place. Pumpkins courtesy of my lovely Wife. Apparently, I left them laying against the garage too long...

And I rebuilt and repaired all the broken and worn bits that had me discouraged from wheeling it. Now? I’m getting ready for Moab in two weeks.
