This is true, and I remember my buddy having issues with the Auto locking hubs too. This trucks aren't like the 1980's lol Those trucks are gold.

Meh, that's a little above my knowledge base. I'm a welder. I'd get as far as saying "Screw these bolts, I'll weld this tranny on, along w/the pedal" then stare at it wondering what to do next.

No buyers remorse. I'm even more happy I went with my manual despite losing crawl control etc.

Do what your heart desires if you can reasonably afford to do it. Mostly because nobody should have regrets in this world.

    My 2 cents.

Testdrove a couple DCSB Autos and they felt ok. Decided I really wanted to drive a Manual before deciding. Finally stumbled upon a silver DCSB Manual. Testdrove it, and the rest is history. Love the truck. 7k+ miles so far. The Manual feels so "right" while the Auto never really seemed that well matched to the truck. The Auto felt more ordinary, less cool.

If finances permit, I'd say go for the Manual.

Eh, I was driving a stick dump truck three days ago and was in EM2 and Si Civics before this truck. I'd say it's much closer to the Civics than it was that truck. I mean, it's built to hold a little more than 130 hp, so it will naturally feel stiffer.

It has a long throw (it's a truck) but it shifts better than the Tremec T56 I had in the GTO and light years better than my 1st gen manual, or any other truck I've driven with a stick, for that matter.

It could shift better and I'm hoping some miles will smooth it out a bit. However, I wasn't looking for my GTI transmission in a truck. That would almost be too smooth if that makes sense.

Apparently I made an account on here 8 years ago :playball:

I've been thinking about getting a new Tacoma which would be my first "new" vehicle ever. As someone who drives stick in all my sporty vehicles, I love that my Pickup is an auto and I can just sit back and relax in it. Traffic isn't that big of a deal with an auto. But reading through this thread, I'm now conflicted. Great. Like I didn't have enough hard decisions already guys. Thinking about a TRD OR AC 4x4.

Anyone ever tow with the manual? If I'm going to tow anything, it'll be a car on a trailer to and from the race track (if that is even do-able with a Taco.) Curious on feedback here on stick vs the auto. I don't have any experience hauling anything so an auto sounds nice for hill starts and such, for when those people who love to park right on your rear bumper at stops. But the manual seems like it would be fun for off-road stuff (which admittedly I don't really do, but sure I'd love to) and maybe hold its value better long term?

Obviously, I should go and test drive one of each if I really do go through with this (just listed my Mustang for sale and the old Pickup will have to go as well). Stopped by a local dealer to look at them on the lot, snag a brochure and, as expected, as soon as I walked in the sales person was on me like a hawk and kept probing and trying to get me to commit to something within 5 seconds of walking in the door. I pretty much had to flee. Brochure kinda sucks too o_O

My 2017 Tacoma MT has a "hill hold" feature, which really helps starting off on an incline. No roll back.

My Tacoma drives like a truck too, OH it is a truck.
Humor aside I love the manual transmission it shifts nicely. And the throw is short compared to the Ford F250 I used to have.

If you are wanting an Access Cab Off Road Manual, they don't offer that model in the US. You would either have to go Double Cab Off Road or go to a Sport to get the Access Cab Manual. They tow fine, but the Reverse Gear is a bit of a PITA though.

Thanks for the responses. Hmm. Seems like Toyota kinda made the decision for me. Almost certain I don't want the Double Cab since I don't have friends or family etc to drag around. Also weird to me that the Access Cab doors open, which I had no idea about until I stumbled across a pic. I do want the 6ft bed though and a Double Cab Long Bed looks weird to me. Plus I like the whole trim package of the OR vs the Sport.

I towed another truck with my taco (without overload leaf ), had to tow it all the way from the trails in 4LO with Uhaul trailer and it did fine. I agree that reverse is high, but I got used to it and can backup any trailer in 2HI anytime now.

You can buy ACLB Off-Road MT, just got to visit northern neighbour and deal with customs :canada:

Haha nice. Super White was actually my first choice, but having gone to the lot, stood way back and looked at them all in a line, I became less sure of myself. Just found that Super White thread though.. And that Pickup looks like mine but red (and crusty ;))!

    Sorry for partial thread hi-jack.

It's amusing reading the back and forth in here. If it shifts better than a T-56 then great, cause I just had mine rebuilt and its okay. Anything better than that in a truck and I'd be impressed I think? But if the whole demeanor of the truck feels like a "dump truck" then.. that doesn't sound fun. If the engine likes revs then for sure a manual sounds like it would pair up better. Ahh but being half awake in the morning, trying to shove some last minute Dunkin Donuts in my face as I head into work, some sips of OJ.. That's a bit of a hassle while rowing. What's the clutch pedal weight and engagement like? Does it have one of those bypass relief lines in it where the pedal has zero tension half way in for weaklings? Is it all just a big, soft, vague slip?

All of these questions could be answered by test driving one but then we'd all have nothing to do on a forum

I'll start by saying I haven't read all the replies :) However, I have never owned an AT until my '18 Pro. Previously I had 2 MT tacos ('06 and '14), and a couple MT Subarus. I went AT for some specific reasons. After driving the AT for about 1k miles, I was in extreme regret. I hated it. I even emailed the dealer asking what the hit would be to trade in for an MT. It was just too much though. Turns out my hatred was just because of the stock tune. I bought the tune from OVTune and bam, I was in love with my AT Taco. Hands down the best purchase. And no, this is not an OVTune plug. Just relating my experience as it relates to the thread topic :)

I still miss driving an MT. I always felt closer to the road...more in control. I will probably buy an MT play car sometime...maybe a Wrangler or something. We'll see. :)

I want to reiterate my opinion is not that the manual was bad. It is that the 6 doesn’t make the truck fun to drive. It was a clunky truck transmission. As for the clutch. Somewhere in between. Not light but didn’t take work. You do need it all the way into the floor though. One not good thing is in very cold (north east Ohio) weather the clutch pedal would stick at the bottom of the range for a spilt second until things got sufficiently warmed up. Even dealer never resolved this. Went away in spring time.

Still calling bull on anyone wanting a manual “for fun”. The definition of fun for me would never include the 6M Tacoma. Functional, reliable, solid, any of those, but never fun just rowing through the 12” long gear throws.
