Radio shuts off when going over a bump

Back behind that nest if wires going up the cab wall vertically you'll see some grounds grouped together on bolts that are only for them

 

Removing nest of wires now.

 

You don't have to remove them, just look more toward the firewall going up the drivers cab wall

 

Found two grounds to the side panels and they look fine. The taped up ground wires looked okay? Check the fuses mixed in with the wires and nothing popped... it is an absolute factory mess down there.

Only thing is I found a clip with nothing attached on the other side? Think it was for the factory alarm which was replaced by previous owner


Not sure what the next step is in finding out why this dang thing shuts off for no reason then pops back on

 

Ok. Run a temp wire from both leads of the battery, pull the dash unit and hook it up direct in the cab and go find a bump and see if it still does it.
Chances are unlikely and if so and you have regrounded what you said above then I would run a new lead and make sure you turn the radio off.
Not sure where you pulled power from but DC can be tricky. Maybe your pulling to much and something doesn't like bumps

 

Have you by chance checked you grounding new and old locations with a multi meter?

 

I pulled power from the factory positive plug, I only spliced in another ground to cross out the possibility that the factory ground plug could be bad

 

No I haven’t. Old multimeter broke sadly but the new ground seems very good

 

Well the gremlin cant be that hard of a fix.
Tring to eliminate possible issues. Going back to the basics here so we can go forward.

It was actually crushed by a vehicle

 

New ground spliced into factory harness. Everything’s clean and should be a solid connection. End connection was also soldiered and about 12” away from headunit

There all over the danm place.

That's why back to the basics. Wires from power source and see if you still have the problem. Then go fron there. If you feel the ground is sound , then it got to be the power if receiver is good.

 

Tracing the radio power through the whole factory harness is going to be fun.

Could a bad battery or a certain type of battery at semi hard hits cause this?

 

I dont think so because your not having any other problems.
You dont have to use the factory power lead, run your own. But try it first with temp because you could be wasting your time.
Like I said DC can be tricky.

 

Could do a quick positive and splice it off an auxiliary light positive possibly. Think I should run a fuse through it or let the one in the actual head unit handle it? It’s a mini 15


EDIT: yellow wire is constant power. While red is accessory/ignition so could be having an issue with either

Typically, I'd grab the constant and accessory from the ignition switch.
