Man, I really don't want to go buy a new ground tent when I already purchased an RTT and it is going to be here Monday

So Doc, what is your take on antennas on a mobile dual band set up? Is it better to have a 1/4 wave mag mount on the roof or a 1/2 wave mounted lower down on the vehicle (say front fender)?
Nice, I haven't registered yet, but I plan to be there Saturday and Sunday. I have something I have to do Friday evening on campus so I figured I'd drive out Saturday morning.

There are a number of things to consider. As an example, if you use a hood mount, you will generally lose signal faster as you travel away from a repeater. A roof mount will minimize some of this. My father has a '17 Taco and we mounted his antenna to the roof (drilled). I have a Prinsu rack and am lifted, so that ruled out a roof mount due to the rack and height of my garage. It's nothing more than an aesthetics thing, but I don't like hood mounts. Also, i you off-road a lot, a hood mounted antenna tends to snag more than a roof mount or behind your cab (something to consider). There aren't a lot of behind the cab options for trucks, so I made my own (mount is now painted black). It doesn't hit the cab when I off-road. 3rd gen's don't have nearly as much body/bed flex as 2nd gens. Whatever set-up you go with, I would recommend an NMO mount - you can easily swap antennas (1/4, 1/2, etc.). If you're looking for a radio, keep an eye out on eBay. My Kenwood NX-700H priced out at nearly $1,000 (it's commercial grade), but I found a slightly used one on eBay for $280 (remote head kit, wires and antenna additional). And join a local ham club.

Seems like you still have good SWR even with the antenna that close to the cab. I’m surprised

    Hey guys,
My 2013 DCSB is the base model so there aren't a lot of 'extras' on it.
I'm working on a tight budget, but there are a few things I'd like to do to enhance my truck a bit, so I'm going to ask a few questions here.....

    1. Does anybody have a used (but still in good condition) bull bar or grill guard you aren't using any longer? I'd prefer black (no SS).

    2. There are several things I wish I had that the SR5/Limiteds have that mine don't. If I could find some of those parts, I could do the install on a lot of it myself. Do you know of any salvage/U-pull-its that has a 2nd Gen Tacoma on site?

Surely somebody needs to clear some space in the garage or shed because of some extra Tacoma parts lying around.

Not trying to sound poor and desperate but like I said I am working on a budget and don't want to pay retail if there are some other deals out there I could get.

    Thanks.

Even though we lost which was not surprising, I at least got 2 good flights in the logbook. I really want to get the opportunity to use my RTT!
