So the previous owner gave him up after the dog retired?

Edit: got the gender wrong. Corrected pronouns.

    Yup. Sounds weird.

Usually show dogs are home/family dogs that are shown with professional handlers. Once they retire from the show ring, they just happily stay home and sleep 23 hours a day like all other dogs.

It doesn’t sound weird, it sounds fucked up. I don’t understand how someone could give up their companion after training and showing and living together for several years together. There’s no amount of money or possessions someone could give me to split with my little dude.

However good for you for taking this dog.

He and an older brother were not getting along. Glaurung was not going to be bred so she offered him to me.

See above. Also the breeder was his handler and he will now be like the rest, happily staying at my home and sleeping 23 hours a day like all other dogs.

Not at all unusual in the show dog world. Most dogs are shown, then bred. Once they retire from breeding many are rehomed and the breeder moves on to a new dog(s). It is pretty sad but very common.

Same goes for show and race horses. My parents bought a thorobred that was about 6 years old and she was a retired race horse.

I adopted my Pembroke Corgi when he was 3 years old. Beau was a great look Corgi. He just didn't make it in the show ring.
So three different show peeps gave up on him. Poor guy was a hot mess when I got him. Beau lived til 14 when me. 1st dog
I had to put to sleep and it sucked cause he was a awesome dog.

Couple weeks ago, Gem took off into the bush after an early A.M. run, which was odd already, she rarely leaves my sight for more than 30 seconds, and always comes when called. but after 20 minutes of calling and searching the treeline I was almost thinking she'd joined the local coyote union.

After half an hour I spotted her a few hundred yards sulking back to the truck.. "oh god not a skunk"

    She brought some souvenirs.
IMG_20180915_072719.jpg IMG_20180915_080652.jpg Two had been completely buried in her forearm. those definitely hurt on the way out, but she sat still leaving me two hands to work with.

I haven't asked her how she feels but I'll take porcupine duty over a skunk any day, I doubt she feels the same way though.
    IMG_20180915_074655.jpg
Never had an opportunity to check out porcupine quills, god are they neat... Especially when they aren't stuck in your dog.
