I have Avenza maps on my phone. It's free, and seems to work great so far. You have to download maps for the area you'll be off-roading. It's actually nice because you're not dependent on having any cell reception.

Here's a screenshot of what the maps look like. The highlighted roads are ones that I marked for my own reference

I use a Galaxy Tab 4 with the free Gaia app, no subscription. You can find many trails available on different sites for download or create your own routes from saved offline maps. You can track and record your progress. All this cost me $40.

Forgot to mention whatever device you use make sure it has GPS.

    Bingo,
that GPS60 I mentioned is over 15 years old, works perfect, runs all day off 2 AA Batteries and can do all that you are asking.
    less complicated, and more robust.

Used ones can be had for cheap.

Hey! Nova Scotia ! Can I come visit? Haha kidding. But quick thread jack. How's the public access for back woods these days? Similar to down here? Ours exist but you have to hunt a lot.

Another vote for Gaia. I use it for hiking and back country skiing. The version I have lets you download maps to the device in advance. So if you're out of coverage range you can still reference the maps in real time.
