i have a 99' prerunner with the 2.7 automatic, and i have noticed only one tire will pull since i have had it, is there some kind of posi, limited slip, or something that is in there and could be messed up?

All first gen Tacos without the TRD package have only 1 tire that actually spins to move the truck forward. With the TRD package you had the rear diff lock that made both rear wheels spin.

Somewhere somebody posted that all Prerunners have at least an LSD. It's an option. I added a Detroit Truetrac LSD to my 04 last month. It took about 3.5 hours to install. I'll have to keep everyone posted when I can put it through the gauntlet...or at least a snow storm.

Nope, not true, at least for 1998-2000 PreRunners, not sure for 2001-2004. Now if you're referring to the rear diff lock then it was part of the TRD package.

Are you saying LSD wasn't an option even, back in the 98-00 Prerunners? Didn't know that.

I'm looking into getting a truetrac for my 08 TSS. Is the truetrac all I have to buy and swap out, or are there additional parts to get?

The LSD and some new bearings would probably be a good idea too. You may need a shim kit though to maintain the proper backlash. My 04 did not need any shims...the stock plate washers (these act as shims on the 04 8.4" differential) move the assembly one way or the other based on their thickness and how far you need to move the Differential/bearing assembly to obtain your backlash number. Keep us posted.

thanks for the info. I'm going to do a little more research first before deciding between the truetrac and a selectable locker. I was just about sold on the LSD until a buddy told me about problems he's had with the LSD on his silverado when one wheel is in a rut. I'll definitely keep my progress posted

just to clarify, is it true that you will still be stuck if one of the drive wheels is off the ground? My friend told me that his LS is just as useless as an open diff in that situation

The manual says if the one wheel is off the ground you can tap the brakes and get the other wheel to engage.
