Lug Nut Socket Size for 2nd Generations

Buying a breaker bar and socket to keep in truck just in case.
Socket size is 21mm for a 2013 right?

Just double checking before I go and buy. Thx

 

A 13/16 socket is perfect for my stock TRD wheel lugs (the flange kind) which works out to 21MM.

That’s exactly what I did. And for home use I bought a socket attachment for my drill so after I break them lose I can spin them the rest of the way off with my drill.

 

Was patching a nail in my wifes Honda. Couldnt get the darn tire off with the usual 4 way lug wrench. So I busted out my breaker bar. Easy peesy. So Ill be keeping a breaker bar in her car and will buy a breaker bar for the Taco. Dont want to be in the position of a stuck lug on the street one day. Ounce of prevention!

 

Whoever came up with the drill bit socket attachment was a damn genius. So handy.

 

I keep an 18 inch breaker in the cab, and between that, and another 18-36 inches of race jack handle, I can break damn near anything loose.

If something is REALLY stuck, you can set your breaker bar at about a 30 degree down angle from horizontal, and then snug a floor jack up under the handle. A few cranks of the jack, and you can unleash loads of force on bolts. 1.5 ton jack @ 18 inches = 4500 lb-ft or torque

 

Dont laugh at this question , but cAn you use a plain old impact driver to remove lug nuts with a socket attachment?

But to the OP's question, I think they are technically 21 mm, but 13/16" is a damn close conversion. (13/16" is just a hair smaller)

 

Also, if you are properly torquing your lug nuts it's no problem to get them off...It's the 100+ ftlb impact wrench at your local shop that's the problem...Lugs should be 83ftlbs on a tacoma and that takes just a little oomf to break

 

True. Gotta watch out with an impact.. Too many ugga duggas is no bueno

 

Yeah, I had the 13/16 because that is the size of the adaptor for my spline lugs...just happened to find out they fit the trd lugs as well (as I was changing a tire), so now I don't have to carry 2 wrenches.

And yeah, that floor jack method will fuck shit up if you do it wrong, but sometimes you gotta go for it (even if it means sacrificing everything)

NEVER tighten a lug with an impact. Spin it on by hand and properly torque. Impact tightening results in broken studs.

Loosening with an impact is fine however.

 

Unless you have wheel locks.. Best to do those by hand both ways. Or so they say

 

The stock nuts tend to swell over time. Worth checking the fit periodically imho. I ended up replacing mine this year because they were jamming in the socket when rotating the tires.

 

Yes you can. If they have been broken lose first with your breaker bar. You can also buy a cheap corded electric impact wrench from HF that will work 100%. I was going to go this route until I decided I didn’t want to chew up my lug nuts.
Stay with the breaker bar method.

Yup. Last time I brought my truck to a shop the guy used the impact on my caliper mounting bolts. When I went to take them off later the bolt snapped clean off in the knuckle. Wouldn't come out with a screw extractor so we had to drill it out on the bridgeport and scrape the threads out. This is why I don't bring my truck to a shop...

Tell that to the Toyota tech that blasted one of mine and ruined the wheel lock and key... At least they accidentally left their wheel key in my truck - I found it later in the glovebox and my stripped one was in the cup holder where I left it.
