Penn is probably the weirdest state to buy booze. Liquor stores are run by the state. Also if a federal holiday , all liquor and wine stores are closed!

And no beer sold at grocery stores, oh and no six packs at beer distributors you have to go to a bar for that!

It wasn't all that long ago when PA required inspections twice a year. Can't remember the year it changed but do remember taking my parent vehicles to get inspected frequently, and they were real rust buckets, held together with black magic and tiger hair. It was also my job to apply the Black Magic and tiger hair, I was the worst at body repair.

Just looked it up "In May 1982, Pennsylvania Governor Richard Thornburgh signed legislation that changed the state's vehicle inspection frequency from twice per year to once"

    1983 I believe...

I actually agree with the safety inspections. It's emissions that's a crock of shit. Depending on what I've eaten, I produce more "emissions" than my truck!

Just take brakes for examples. There are too many people that don't bother checking their brake pad wear until they are grinding the pads. Most of us check their cars but there are too many idiots out there that don't. I don't want a 2ton vehicle on the road that is dangerous.

Numerous studies have shown that they do nothing for "public safety"...

It's more for the "financial safety" of the state and all the mechanics!

See I’m all for a card everyone rule. Our state has barcoded IDs so I’m all for everyone getting scanned at alcohol point of sales.
Catches many other things than underage drinking.

The rest of the obsessive laws I can do without. Our state has a bunch of bullshit too.

As a former mechanic, I can tell you that plenty of people ride around with dangerous conditions such as very low brake pads/shoes, front end parts on the verge of falling apart, and yes, even brake/turn/head lights out, all of which cause hazards to you and your family.

Last time I brought this up a few years ago I was assaulted by members who felt it was better to have those conditions than to have to suffer getting an inspection done periodically. So in advance let me say, Idgaf.

My Taco passed safety inspection in October 2017 with the front brakes at about 50%...

In February-March 2018, my truck started making these awful noises and I brought it into the dealer because I couldn't take it anymore!

I was expecting that they would have to tighten somethine, or that the pads might have to be replaced at most. Imagine my shock when the dealer called me and told me that my front brakes were completely shot. The left caliper was seized and the pad had evaporated down to nothing. The right brake had 25% life left.

I had to get the calipers, pads, and rotors replaced at a cost of almost $1,300!

I’d like to see the data that shows a certain number of accidents are due to poorly maintained vehicles.

I work in personal injury litigation and see a lot of motor vehicle accidents. Gotta say I don’t know of one due to a poorly functioning vehicle (although I know they exist).
Inspections don’t fix stupidity with a driver.

It costs the state a lot of money for inspections. Plus don’t the dip doodles with POS cars just drive around without doing their inspections?

    @PackCon

One thing I can't stand is the check engine light...

If the check engine light is on, it's an automatic fail. What sucks is that, as I found out a few years ago, disconnecting a malfunctioning horn can cause the check engine light to come on!

The plan is to set the system up to flag things like warrants or if someone is out on probation and not allowed to purchase, will detect expired licenses, verify the license is not fake, etc.

Hopefully the state can get everything set up properly. Would be nice at voting booths.

I lived in PA for a few years and worked in a shop that did the state inspections and they failed my Jimmy because I had a lightbulb out on my heater controls. I find it a bunch of B.S. that a hole in the body fails but if you put duct tape over it it passes. As for alcohol the beer dist. was right over the hill but state store was about 30 miles away.

I had the opportunity to talk to a guy doing contracting work for one of my neighbors, back in either 2016 or 2017 (I believe late 2016). He had a late 1980s Chevy 1500 that was in okay condition except for front end damage from hitting a deer. The truck was in decent shape, and keep in mind this was in 2016. One thing I noticed was that the inspection stickers had expired in 2011!

I asked the guy why his truck hadn't been inspected in like five years, and he told me that the exhaust was leaking or something, but I forget why he hadn't gotten it fixed. It was either that he couldn't afford the repairs, or it was his beater truck and he was too lazy to get it fixed. Either way, he'd been driving around with expired inspection stickers since November 2011 and hadn't gotten pulled over!

but... there are still assholes driving around like that even with all the bullshit waste of time inspections! Inspections dont alleviate stupid, they only burden those that do the right thing.

Honestly, the safety inspection doesn't bother me all that much because it keeps pieces of shit off the road. Also, I get my safety inspection for free at the dealer. It's the goddamned emissions test I can't stand! Sixty bucks plus tax!
