Virginia, New Jersey, and California only require it every two years...

If Pennsylvania did it every two years I'd be fine with it!

Yeah. Five minute fix but still bs. I wasn't certified to inspect. Here in AZ almost everywhere sells beer Ald liquor and no inspection. Emissions is required every 2 years after a vehicle is 7 years old and only in Phoenix and surrounding cities.

Pennsylvania requires you to give the shop your insurance and registration up front, otherwise the work order will not go through.

It most likely will. It had a new catalytic converter installed by Toyota two years ago.

I know you can fail if you have an automatic transmission and the "PRNDL" on the gear selector doesn't light up, but who cares if the HVAC controls don't light up? Having working A/C and heat is not a requirement to pass inspection!

In case anyone is curious about the backstory of what @PennSilverTaco tagged me for, I bought a $600 1998 Tacoma SR5 v6 with 450,000 miles off Craigslist. No title, only a bill of sale. It goes back two owners without a title so I couldn't apply for a duplicate title. The original plates also had $1,500 in backfees, so no way I was going that route.

Vermont has a loophole where they do not title vehicles older than 15 years old, so I registered and tagged my truck there for 5% of the NADA value of $5,000, or around $400.

I now have a registration slip in the state of Vermont, which acts as my title here. All I have to do is take the Vermont plates and registration, bring it to the California DMV, transfer into the state, and boom shakalacka I have a Clean California Title in my name out of thin air.

Here's a more detailed post of how I did it.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...nual-build-thread.534120/page-4#post-17871568

Keep in mind I live thousands of miles away from Vermont, and have never been there.

I was told if it came from the factory with the option, it has to work properly. My pillar mounted spotlight didn't work, but that was an aftermarket item and wasn't required.

Someone did not bother to check that the hood was properly secured before they returned my truck to me. I found this out the hard way when I merged onto Route 611 just minutes after leaving the dealership...

Thank heavens my truck has a secondary emergency latch designed to keep the hood from flying backward and smashing into the windshield!

Inspections (20 bucks) every year and cost me 489 dollars a year to register my Tacoma and 368 to register my 4Runner. I don’t want to hear any complaining. And we have to get our vehicles a reconstruction permit to do any modifications from stock. That’s 15 bucks an a secondary inspection.

In choosing a place to live, I have 4 automotive criteria: No safety inspections, No emissions testing, No front license plate required, No road salt. I literally would not live where any of those things exist.

OK I thought Utah had weird liquor laws, but you win.

I'm glad Utah has dropped the inspection requirement, I doubt it every did anything but line the repair shops pockets with fake repairs. I once had a guy quoting me the cost of a brake job before he had even removed the tire! Funny thing how the car failed it brake inspection. The guy was visibly disappointed when I told him I would be fixing it myself. In the end there wasn't a damn thing wrong with the brakes. :annoyed:

Just keep your truck in good working order as you should, and inspection is a breeze...once a year, no big deal. I live in Pa. and I’m glad we have it...

I actually really like the front plates, from a safety and accident standpoint. It's easier to identify vehicles in event of a crime, or something happens involving you. It has come in handy many times for me when I've had to call the CHP, or report someone, or take footage off a CCTV system.

From an aesthetic standpoint, they're ugly. That's it.

Also it's very useful when someone rear ends you, and drives away.
