4g for a diesel yes please! People already pay $800 for OVtune to try and get some sense of decent performance out of their truck. Shit...wheels and tires alone are a $2k mod

    highly highly doubt it.

With everything going hybrid at toyota why would they suddenly go to diesel?
IF it ends up coming I'd say it ends up in the Tundra, definitely not the Taco.

What kind of performance are you looking for in a diesel? Because 0-60 times would most likely be 13 and a half seconds like the Hilux. By the time you add decent tires, it'll be closer to 14, maybe even 15.

People have this illusion that diesel is somehow better. No clue where it comes from. Diesels are better for towing. If I'm towing, I'm not buying a Tacoma.

And by the time they add about $3k for the option, add in much more expensive maintenance, DEF costs, more expensive fuel, and factor in minor mileage improvements, they may break even at about the 600,000 mile point.

The big draw to diesel used to be the cheaper cost of fuel compared to gasoline. With no fuel cost savings and the added emissions equipment, there is no financial upside to diesel.

Agreed. Our family business used to run them many years ago but when fuel went up, that, along with the added maintenance, made it a bad financial decision.

depending on climate they suck too.

I've owned diesel, sure I love the torque and MPG, but starting in the winter when its -40C? not warming up to the point you have no heat? no thanks

Even if a diesel was an option, would the rest of the truck be up to towing much more weight than it already does?

Besides towing, what other clear advantages could a diesel bring to the table?

Exactly, diesel passenger vehicles and light trucks were never that great, but we're cheaper to run.

Now diesel fuel is more expensive, diesel engines have lots of emissions hardware that is expensive to maintain, and gasoline engines get pretty good mpg's comparatively.

Besides range, what is the big attraction?

I have an opinion, but think it will ruffle some feathers.....

Nothing. Diesel does not a tow vehicle make, either. Tacoma is a truck that can tow, but that’s about where it ends.

the thing is, is the range really there?

everyone thinks "diesel is more efficient i'll get better range"

anyone ever look at the MPG of a Cummins vs Hemi? they're almost the same the difference is with the amount of torque they have.
its only when you get into the small diesel engines like VW TDI that get better MPG.

the added maintenance is expensive, the emissions are a pain in the ass, the fuel cost are actually cheaper here in the summer months. come winter diesel is more money.
Off road is the only place I wouldn't mind the diesel option for the added torque, but even then not sure if I'd even switch.

    That said
Smell of Diesel > smell of petrol
If there's one thing I miss aside from the MPG of my Jetta TDI its that beautiful smell of diesel smoke and the diesel fuel when pumping.
Oh and I can't lie I miss the whistle of the turbo

The old smell of diesel, before the ultra low sulfur diesel fuel became a thing!
