Spare tire mount build

not sure if this is the right place to put this but I’m going to start building a verticle spare tire mount for the bed of my truck.

I have enough plans and measurements to get something started. It’s going to be slow progress as I’ll be building it at work during off hours.

Yeah that’s funny someone posted. I actually just started cutting some metal today.

 

I'd put it all the way toward the cab. Mounting it there, you're losing easy access space AND that storage bin. Just my $.02.

 

That would be the better spot but the fenderwell hump is there so where I’m gonna mount it towards the tailgate it can be off to the side as far as possible.

 

I'm looking to make one soon as well. I think I'll be putting it as much off to one side as I can, flat against the front bed wall. We'll see how it goes!

 

I’ve seen people mount there’s like that and it looks like it blocks a lot of the back window. A lot of the reason I’m doing mine this way is I can mount it off existing holes and the bed rail system.

 

So I think I got to a point where everything is going to work. I just need to cut out pieces. These are gonna be the hardest part. Once these are finished and welded on the base it’s gonna be pretty smooth sailing from there.(these are the tabs for the bed bolts)

 

Got the base situated. Just need to clean up edges some more and get it tacked. Going to try and get my co worker to plasma table out the wheel mounting peices.

Worked on something similar with mine and scrapped the idea for a while......stoked to see where this goes.....

 

I’ve thought about this for a while and had a bunch of idea’s. If my thinking is correct it should work pretty good and be nice and stable without damaging the bed or bedsides. Also bolt on, and trying to make it light. Only problem is it won’t be able to fit that much bigger of a tire(mount is going to have a 1” 1/2 or so movement up or down.

Looking good! I can see you’re pretty well committed, but thought I’d add my 2 cents.

In the bed was not an option for me due to the cover, so I chose this route. Picked up all the pieces on Amazon and a buddy welded them together.

 

That’s a interesting idea, like the use of the wheel spacer

 

Bolted in the base and I’m thinking I might make the design way more simple and just have tire stops welded to the base and have a strap to hold the tire and not do the whole adjustable bolt on deal. If I can make the tire stable side to side I’m going to do it like that. At the rate I’m going I’m never going to finish this thing.

 

Interesting idea. You're thinking of switching to just the chocks (stops) on either side of the bottom of the tire, but not a vertical plate to bolt the wheel to via the lug nut holes? If I'm understanding that correctly, my vote would be the opposite: just bolt it on and leave out the stops. If you had it sitting a couple inches off the bottom of the bed, that would allow for a bigger wheel in the future. And from Veteran-young-guy's cool post (and all the Jeeps, etc. with the tires on the back), it seems like bolting on is all the support you need.

 

Yes you’re correct and I tried it last night and as I thought it doesn’t work just wants to top over. So I’m gonna add the part that goes through the lugs to hold it to the bedside. Wanted the bottom support so the bedside doesn’t flex and start breaking from the spare moving around.

 

If you're attaching to the side of the bed, that's something to think about. But it looks from your pictures like you're attaching it to the bed bottom and the "lug plate" will be on an arm welded to that bottom plate. If that's the case, I don't think flex would affect the bed.
