Rusted 2009 Tacoma underbody

Even with the known Tacoma problems, it's still the best selling truck in its class, and I believe it's their customer and public relations. Nothing but good things to say about the dealership I've dealt with, my frame was good so they descaled and recoated it. I've been underneath plenty of times since and it looks like they did a great job. My advice to anybody not getting satisfaction (within limits) is to try another dealership. Don't expect to get a new truck or even new or reconditioned frame out of them if the truck 15 years old.

 

A new twist. The frame my dealer ordered 25 days ago arrived well before the 2 to 3 month estimate! However the associated parts package could not be ordered until the framed was phsically present on site. I'm not sure why Toyota is doing this; it may have something to do with some dealers hording parts and improving their inventory to take advantage of the smorgasbord of rusted extras they will offer to repair at dealer's prices and my expense. Do I have that right? Mini Mart <the 77 year-old Millennial>.

 

No they get paid a damn good sum for labor for the frame replacements.

 

You are correct, but they also get paid by me out of pocket for my non-covered, rusty parts at the retail level, e.g. power steering lines, actuator etc. if I choose to have that work done. Why won't I when everything is exposed? Yes, they get paid for their work.

I would like to see one of these Toyota advertisements where they claim their Tacomas (or any of their vehicles for that matter) can go on forever. That's a tough claim to try to live up to.

 

Ends up costing Toyota about 10k per frame in terms of parts and labor.

The frame is about 2k, but it takes two to three mechanics almost a full week working daily to swap it. The labor cost is outrageous. Overall Toyota has spent 3.2 billion on this problem. Its American steel too - they just didn't spray it correctly before assembly, hence the rust. The frames were made in Ohio, if I recall correctly.

 

Word on the street is it’s a frame replacement.

Not a replace everything replacement.

Sue the state you live in instead. They spread salt (despite rust issues on vehicles) on the road knowingly; therefore they are an accomplice in this murder.

 

lynryd3---what did they charge you for the new rack and PS lines? I just got the call from service that my rack is seeping and would be less expensive to replace now as opposed to when it fails if the truck is put back together? Thanks, Dan 2010 Tacoma Double Cab

Anyways... Well I may be facing this issue soon myself. I just flushed my PS fluid but it seems my steering is still tight at times. I sprayed lube into the knuckle and it seems to have loosened up but it still gets tight again occasionally. Also, when I was re-installing my skid plates the other day, I noticed the metal line for the PS fluid was rusting through. I think I will just be having to face this cost at some point in the near future.

 

Power Steering rusted out on my 2010....I believe it was $600-700 parts and labor for the whole shebang via the dealer..This was not something I wanted to get into replacing.....

 

Here is a photo my power steering line that rusted thru. NOTE the dripping fluid coming out of the line. Unfortunately the Toyota settlement didn't include this equally rusted component.

 

I may have to do this soon. I saw one of my lines getting rusty.

 

First I tried that liguid with built in goop that supposed to seal the leak. It didn't work. I have a slow drip in the band there on the coil. Now it's shiny and new for as long as that will last. I should take a picture it's been one season.
