I would hands down do the 2001, looks much better kept and the owner at least knows some history. The 98 is from a dealer that picked it up at auction and likely knows no history of it.

 

$5k seems steep for repairs.

No to hard. Welding will make them brittle. Better to use grade 5 so the heat from welding heat treats it.

After being a daily for a decade, it's just sad to watch it just sit in the driveway. Somebody should enjoy it.

 

Cool, I hear you first new car ever was a 97 sidekick only 200 miles when I bought it. Was looking for a car for my 16 yo son this might not fit that but it might be fun for hunting. Have to talk to the wife and maybe we will be in touch.
