if you had an opportunity to give *honest and constructive* feedback to the engineers at Toyota about the 3rd gen Taco, what would it be?

Take the guts from the 4Runner and put it into the Tacoma. Because supercharger.

You can talk to engineers all day - they are likely in agreement with most everything on TW. It's the bean counters and exec management you need to have a talk with. I'd say pay more attention to the issues and the customers who are complaining - and be proactive. Toyota has a good product but, as an example, 2-3 years to fix a transmission shift issue is completely unacceptable. Toyota cannot assume that the newer players (GM and Ford) will not take a bunch of their market share. Everywhere you read reviews on the Tacoma they call out the AT transmission - even though that might be fixed now. Toyota seems to be living on their laurels with the Tacoma and that is a bad plan.

Unfortunately, this is true, and it will eventually flow up to the shareholders demanding profits.

I've been with a company for over 30 years, and like most manufacturing businesses, it has gone from the engineering department deciding how something will be built, to the sourcing department deciding how to build it with the least expensive parts. That kind of process generally results in a less than superior product. It may function, but longevity may be compromised, and it won't "feel" like a quality product.

I shouldn't have to scroll through the menu on the radio, turn off the lights, touch the daytime mode button on the radio, turn back on the lights, scroll back to the radio just to change the brightness of the radio display. It should be simpler than this.

Ability to lower/raise the front seat.

That’s it. Keep it up, Toyota.

I love my little taco, not much I would change.

I guess change the MT reverse gear ratio. It does not seem very "strong" when backing up a trail on a slight incline, but you could probably do 50 in reverse.

Sacrificing power for MPG is not something that this particular market is looking for. I would love a switchable ECO (low power, high MPG) and SPORT (high power, lower MPG) ECU modes.

Even with the shit flinging that goes on whenever the Tacoma is questioned on here, I don't think anyone who owns a 3rd Gen M/T can argue this point.

Like, why? Why do we need a reverse gear that is higher than 1st?

If Toyota were to look at the manual gearbox, I would personally ask for a bit less of a gap in ratios from 1st to 2nd, and a deeper OD for 6th. That last one would make 5th more useful and bring down the cruising RPM on the highway.

Fix the seating ergonomics, add sport mode. That's about it.

    This
    Especially the lower reverse gear.
Keep the manual transmission, I don't ever want an auto.
Manual transfer case would also be nice.

In all honesty, and in addition to the above mentioned manual gearbox comments, I couldn't have this conversation with Toyota engineers without mentioning the factory ECU calibration.

There will be those that say there's nothing wrong with it, and that's fine.

BUT, if you honestly compare 04B10/11/12 and 04A70 to the TSB updated versions, well I'd have to again ask Toyota - why? Why did you release the 3rd gen like that?

Good on them for FINALLY fixing it though. I flashed 04B13 myself and can tell you there's a HUGE difference in driveability over the factory calibration (in my case, 04B10).

This is all M/T talk, slushbox guys may have a different opinion!

I think it's past time that the Tacoma at least gets driver seat adjustments.
That object with a big screen in the middle should be much more useful than it is.
And how about getting legal to put all of the warnings on one big label and mount to the bottom side of the carpet.

I've driven many older Toyotas and liked the t handle brake. This is my first Toyota and am more of a fan of console mounted ones though.

At least we don't have a stupid electronic one.
