Upgrade 3rd gen Jbl speakers

I don't. From everything that I have read on the JBL system, no one has really figured out how to compensate for the JBL amp/dsp. ********* and OEM+ are the two big audio folks for these trucks, and they have nothing (at the time of me typing) for JBL systems, although OEM+ is working on something.

If I were going from a non-JBL to a JBL unit, I would honestly take a hard look at selling what I had, and going new head unit, new amp, new speakers.....

 

Ah, gotcha! I think I recall reading someone switched out the head unit and was able to get things to start playing/upgrading nicely together.

 

Yep. You can put a really good system together on the cheap but you will have to can the head unit...

 

If your wanting to add your own amp and speakers and ditch the JBL amp, get a idatalink Maestro harness and run a DSP of your own. Then you could keep the OEM headunit.

Made a world of difference when I replaced my tweeters with the Subaru's. Then I added an underseat powered Sub, and I'm more than happy.

I might do the rest of the speakers some day, but don't really see a need.

 

Owner of a new '19 here (not pictured yet), and it's my first of five Tacos with the JBL. It is TRASH, but I think most everyone agrees on that.

Good news, though! I just chatted with OEM+ and it looks like they're somewhere in the ballpark of 60-90 days to having a JBL replacement ready for order. Of course, things change, problems arise, and I wouldn't hold them to that timeframe, but I'm DEFINITELY holding out for that system. The estimated price point was FAR below the $3,500 average that I'm being quoted from car audio shops.

So, tick tock tick tock! Let's make my Taco rock!

 

Based on my observations, this data appears to be correct, except for one thing: the rear door speakers are 2 ohm like all the other speakers. Can you provide the URL to your source?

[EDIT] I think I found the source. It is from 2011 and is in reference to a second gen Highlander JBL system which might explain the difference.

 

Well..it's October 17th..I 100% hate my JBL system in my 2016 Taco..can't wait for a reputable company to come up with something..I want to keep the stock deck since theft is so prevalent in my city..pretty sure I have blown the driver side tweeter and door speaker somewhere...

Put some JBL Club 9630's/6520's along with the Subaru tweeters for $250 and it was worth every penny. It bumps with the stock head unit too. heard good things about the kicker route as well.

 

Well the JBL system is different than the non-JBL system

 

Yeah sorry just putting info out there if OP (or others) gets their hands on a non-JBL head unit.

 

That's awesome!!!! I never would have found that on my own! I didn't even know such a thing existed!

If I follow the diagram correctly, I just need to run power (and ground) to the additional amp and connect it to the AmpPRO and the AmpPRO does the rest??!!

Can you recommend a small amp which can be tucked away to run with this? I'm not looking to rattle the mirrors on the vehicles next to me (ok maybe deep down inside I am) but I would just like my music a bit louder. I have speakers and a sub-woofer ready to go to handle an increase in power!

Well it’s not entirely a plug-and-play operation. The new amp has to be wired to the speakers, which is where that harness I mentioned comes in. Still requires a good amount of wiring to be done, but prevents any cutting of factory wiring.

A good 5-channel is always an option if you don’t need a ton of power to your sub. I’m running the Kicker KXA800.5 and it’s getting me 50x4 and then a 400w sub channel, which is plenty for me.

 

Oh, It looked plug and play. I just assumed (yes I know) that the amp fed the (what ever it does) to the AmpPRO via the RCA style connectors. Then the AmpPRO sent the amplified signal to the factory amp which is connected to all the speakers.

I hope this shows you my lack of knowledge of Audio equipment lol. Please help save me from myself!

I overlooked the harness you mentioned. It says no cutting of factory wires. I assume one set of the open wires with a plug (male or female) gets attached to the new amp. Where do the other open wires with the corresponding plug attach to?

 

So here’s how the whole thing works

The amppro brain goes up at the radio. It gets fed a digital signal directly from the radio and it creates 6 (front/rear/sub) true pre-amp outputs.
You then run RCA cables from these pre-outs to your new amp.
That harness posted above connects to the factory amp and factory wiring. This allows you to connect it to your new amp and feed your higher-powered audio straight into the factory wiring that goes to each speaker. This keeps you from having to run new wire all over the truck.
It also allows you to retain the factory amp so if you wanted to upgrade your main speakers but keep the factory sub, you could do so.
