Yessir I will let you know. Hoping to get into actually cleaning up the truck some on week nights this coming week to prep for putting everything back in.

So his idea is that 5.29 with an auto gives you almost the same final ratio as M6 with 4.30? This may not be ideal for the transmission. The auto clutches may not be able to hold up to the same amount of drag as the manual clutch.

I would really like to see these calcs with the tire size factored in.

My plan is to re-gear with 4.30 to get back to the final drive ratio with 33s and then use a crawl box to give me the 4-Lo ratio I want. Expensive...yes. But the correct way to do it.

what do you mean with tire size factored in?

I'm still re-reading this and trying to make sense out of what he is saying. Way too many words and not enough data.

I just don't understand what you mean about the auto clutches and drag

I think he means if you have an auto transmission, what the manual transmission does is irrelevant because they're completely different designs. You should regear only to compensate for tire size to get it back to same ratio as stock.

He's not comparing the two, he's just sharing info for any manuals or autos who may be considering the ratio. It's the 5.29 mega thread for both Autos and Manuals.

Also he's giving you the data that's hard to find, for tires a simple tire calculator would help there.

I'm still confused about our autos having clutches though, but as far as drag goes, with these gears you're shifting less so should be better on the torque converter and transmission with less heat created.

I would say I would not gear to get back to stock, but gear to have a little more power down low, we all know tacomas are overgeared and underpowered

This is what had me messed up.

Crunched the ratio numbers and as you can see the final drive ratios for an AT on 5.29s is almost the same final drive ratio as the MT with stock 4.30s. We can see that the overdrive gears do their job in that you can run really low gears and maintain decent mileage while having exceptionally lower gearing through the first 4 gears.

I was assuming that the manual had a lower numerical value for 5th and 6th. Which according to his chart they do not.

I gotcha, the guy seems to know his stuff and is doing things probably the best way possible. Regear before tires and just sharing his experiences with us.

He's edited that first post quite a few times to show new important data.

I do think 2400 RPM @ 70 mph is a little high, but if he is on stock tires maybe it will work out. Anyone talking about what it will do to the variable valve timing?

I'm unsure how it would hurt VVT. It's variable so can compensate for any RPM maybe.

Also 2400 RPM isn't going to hurt it, the trucks rev to what 6500 or 7000 before redline. I will say the trucks don't have the power to run as low RPM as they do at highway speeds. 4.1 would've been what I assume great for stock autos i think.

You should do it so I can drive yours before I re-gear.

    Money Money Money..... MONNNNIIIIEEEEEEE

Also higher RPMs are better, because our trucks are known to ping, higher RPMs decrease chance of ping. Boooom science pulled out my ass, but my opinion is the trucks are better at high RPM than low RPM engine knock.
